Used MH Discount from Retail

We currently own a 5th wheel and are saving up to get a MH. We are a year maybe 2 from the actual purchase depending final budgeting.

I have started trying to keep abreast of pricing on a few units that are 3-5 years old and don't have a clear idea on "normal" discounting. I know on new it's roughly 30% off of retail but on used I'm not sure.

We're going to be in about the 200k range for our 1st MH so, if XYZ dealer is advertising a MH for say 200k what would a typical discount be in your opinion?

Have seen many that advertise a value of 180K to 200K but list for ~130K.

The NADA guide is useful to know if a used coach is priced in the ballpark. When using the guide DON’T adjust based on options. If diesel, don’t adjust based on mileage either. They are in the ball park if the coach is priced somewhere in the middle of low to average retail.

With good negotiations you should try to get them to go near or below the low retail price.

I just bought last year from a dealer... advertised at $210k, closed at $180k and probably had $10k in repairs performed free after the purchase.

For my same unit, I saw pricing from $250 to $150 being advertised.

Went to look at the $150k, unit and it was definitely sub par.

With my experience now, I would first try to buy from a private person that is meticulous. I would definitely pay a premium to have a coach that was well cared for, has complete service records, and have a previous owner available after the sale that truly knows their coach.

I spent hours trying to figure out stuff that would have been easily handled if I could have spoken to the previous owner directly.

If buying from a dealer, I would still like to see all records. I'd also want some sort of warranty since you'll likely pay more from a dealer than privately.

NADA is about as close as it gets, as they take the factory invoice price and deduct a straightline % which may or may not reflect actual selling price.

Used RV pricing is all over the map. I subscribed to the NADA wholesale price guide for a couple of years when we were actively shopping.

A good way to get a price feel is to do a search on RVTrader.com and RVT.com for a particular make/model and narrow the year down to a 3 year window. Make sure the search is Nationwide. Then at the top rank order by price with lowest first. Certain listings will stand out like a 2009 priced lower than several 2007 models. You will also find dealers like PPL and MHSRV that price their used coaches very competetively. A certain dealer with stores in in Fresno and OR will almost always have the highest price (he was $100k above what we paid for our coach).

Then you need to be ready to buy airplane tickets and start looking. The main places we visited were centered around Phoenix, CA, TX, and FL. We flew in and rented a car and made sight seeing side trips on the side. Take a camera and a note book and keep lots of notes. You will learn from every coach you look at.

A side note. I would include high end coach models back to 2005. Look at Foretravel, Newell, and Prevost conversions. Most high end diesel coaches will age much better than trailers and there are some great deals out there. The other advantage is these older models have fewer emission systems.

I hope this helps. Enjoy the search!

This might help to answer your question on depreciation, and of course supply and demand enter the picture as well.

PPL lists the actual selling prices of used RVs they have sold. It is a great resource because asking prices are not all that helpful.
