Used Values
I know there are tons of threads on used values and deprecation.
Im finding that with both private and dealer sales the asking prices are about 25% higher than NADA.
Is this normal and is the actual value somewhere in between asking and NADA, or is NADA a fair and reasonable value?
My self imposed budget is 40k, all cash.
Diesel or gas, Im looking for the best value for the money.
Age isnt a factor as much as condition and quality.
I would prefer an older, high quality coach vs a newer lower quality.
So if I expect to pay 40k, should I be looking at coaches with an asking price of 40k, or should I be looking at 50k, expecting the seller to come down to 40k?
I can afford future repairs and maintenance, so that doesnt play into initial acquisition cost.

I've heard that sales are sagging & that NADA values are deceptively high. Maybe as much as 20%.
A friend recently sold his immaculate DP for 25% under NADA, after the dealer only offered 40% of book value, in trade.
Dealer prices should be much more negotiable than private sales, because in most instances they've already low-balled someone on that trade & have lots of room to maneuver.
Private sellers sometimes cling to NADA retail because they're still tied up in a loan & possibly upside down. As long as you aren't insulting, it shouldn't hurt to offer lower.

The older the rig the more NADA’s prices seem to be lower than the market. My baseline is NADA low retail without adding any options. Unfortunately many sellers are upside down (they financed for 15 years) and they do not have the money to pay off the loan difference. Takes a year or more for reality to set in on how overpriced their rig is.
My 08 Navigator’s Low Retail is still more than what I paid for it 18 months later. I made a list of all the reasonably priced 07-09 Navigators and then made an offer on one that had been for sale for over a year even though it was 1500 miles away and priced above low retail.
PS: it’s been a really good MH.

NADA prices seem to be a little low. I don't know where they get their data to come up with a price.
You are right that the main thing is condition and your preferences. When we purchased our used MH we spent six hours looking it over and driving it. We had a "Check List" and tried to be methodical about the process. We also spent time checking the different units on the internet to see what kind of problems others had with the same model.
It is a lot of money so don't get in a hurry or be pushed by a salesman. There are a lot of good units for sale but you may have to travel some to find the one for you. We had to go half way across the country to find our's.
Good luck.

I think that NADA estimates are always lower than the actual market value. I would got to RVTrader.com and do a search for the exact model to see what they are going for around the country.

nada is high. az has the best prices as far as used private sales in summer months.
when i bought my coach nada had it at 78k, i paid 45k cash that was in may.
with your budget your looking at 2000-2004 38ft - 42ft dp or 2005-2007 38ft-40ft gas.
i found mine on craigslist was looking at units 10k over my budget cause cash in hand talks

I would prefer closer to 30ft than 40ft.
Yes, I have checked AZ prices.
I have lived in Tucson 3x and would like to make it 4x, but thats not in the cards for us.
My sister still lives in Tucson and I have thought about flying out for a visit and driving a MH back to Georgia.
I have this crazy idea that AZ MHs have more sun damage and less water damage than those around here.

I bought my MH last Spring from the same original selling dealer, it was on consignment. It had 50k with new Michelins, brakes, all new hoses etc. I am now the 2nd owner of this rig, he kept every receipt, correspondence with Winnebago etc. It actually was like new inside & out & always stored inside. I paid about 15% above NADA avg retail, which I didn't mind doing to get a good one. Besides it was within a 100 miles from home!
Sometimes if they really check out, & you like it I say buy it even if you have to pay a bit more than NADA.
