Vegas 27.7 Generator Exhaust Carbon Monoxide

Thor Owners Manual says, "Do not sleep in coach with generator running". Doesn't make sense if you want to Boondock, camp off grid. Oh, and don't leave pets in coach with generator running. My generator is under my dining table slide. Cummings says do not install generator under a slide-out unless you have 36" minimum from bottom of slide-out to exhaust tip. I have 15" and yes carbon monoxide detector goes off on my Vegas 27.7 if there is no wind outside. Thor technical department says you should not be running generator unless you are driving down the road. Is this what they call self contained?

Does anybody have a fix for this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

They make a GenTuri ehxaust extension that you may be able to use, if the pipe is near the edge if the slide.
It sen# the fumes up to over the roof.

Thor is full of garbage, the generators are absolutely intended to run stationary AND in motion. That is how they spend thousands of hour.

It sounds as if there is an installation issue AND also some construction concerns. While no RV is air tight, you might have excess gaps around slide. Window etc. Could also be a break in the tailpipe and/or a poorly running generator dumping excessive CO.

Call Thor back and tell them they have an issue. You could also reach out to RVIA, the sanctioning agency. This model sounds potentially in violation of their EGS1 standard.

Agreed. Events like races, you may be required to use a version of a Genturi, it can quite down a genny exhaust a bit as well. It may also add some extra safety to prevent lighting dry grass on fire.
I can set mine up in a just couple minutes.I'm considering a seconf for my Aqua hot.

You say that the generator is under the slide but does the exhaust exit under the slide? If so it would be worthwhile to have a muffler shop route the exhaust elsewhere so that it would be easier use a Gen turi. The sidewalls and cargo bays rend to trap fumes under the coach if the wind is slight. A genturi is great for any time you are stationary and running the generator.

I agree, extend exhaust & get a genturi. Maybe and extra CO detector for sleeping.

Manufacturer's liability restrictions often conflict with normal usage. That is the way of the US at least.

So use a Gen Turi or maybe loosen the clamp at the generator, pivot the exhaust back and add an extension so it comes out 36"+ behind the slide. Both you and Cummins should be safe then.

Sounds like Thors issue is improper installation and location. I see so many RVs with the generator exhaust under a slide out. This is about the worst place to install it.

I think most RVs are designed by people that never use one.

Put the slide in at night if using the generator.

There are RV regulations, just like home regulations that say what you can and can't do, like the location of the exhaust. On my previous coach, they ran the Oasis hydronic heater exhaust from the driver's side of the coach to the passenger side between the two sides. They did that because between slides was legally acceptable versus under a slide. BUT.....it blew right onto the patio.

I rerouted the exhaust to a safe position of the driver's side. I know many are saying to add a Venturi, but that would be a pain. Every time you stopped, you would have to pull it out and install it if you wanted to run the generator.

Often the exhaust pipes on generators come out one side of the generator, wrap around one side and then out another. Take a look at your setup and see if the exhaust can be rerouted to another area, like out the rear of the coach. There is nothing that says it can't be routed forward and out near or in front of a front wheel.

Are you sure it's not the batteries boiling, setting off the alarm ?

Is the generator exhaust pipe clean or covered in black soot from to much fuel ?
