Velvac Mirrors

I have a white powder coming out from under the chrome on my mirrors. Anyone know what this powder is and what can I use to remove it?

That's corrosion in my experience. You see it a lot on aluminum that's been chrome plated.

Velvac Mirrors

Just removing the existing chrome and replate or repaint. You can buy new ones (bases) from Velvac for $200 each! Complete mirrors are about $1000.

Call these folks:

http://spacecoast-plating.com

David Pratt is the owner & is a coach owner. If you send them the mirror base, they will do a first class replate. 5 years ago it was just under $150 each.

The loose powder should come off easily with most any solvent or polish. The problem is the corrosion that is the source of it, which will just keep on making more powder. Replating or replacing is the only real solution.

You can buy direct from Velvac via their website, but it's pricey.

Ours are getting pretty close to needing the bass replaced too. Bead or Walnut shell blast; Good quality re-plating (Steve, thanks for the reference.); 9 times out of 10 - a place that does custom chrome plating for Harley's - will give you a far superior plate job then OEM from Velvac; And based upon the previous opinion, I do recommend finding a quality shop to re-plate/chrome our existing bases. As this should be a better grade of plating.

And finally, when all back and installed. Do take the time to keep a good coat of protection on them. So many of the days products are so easy to apply. It's almost like needing add it to a monthly 'To Do' punch list! 10 mins max, to do two bases once a month!

And as bad as the OEM plate job is on the mirror bases. The air horns seem to have even worse plating. And of course, require a trip the roof to address!

Best of luck to you,
Smitty

It's really easy to remove the glass for both top mirror and lower mirror... I just replaced my lower mirror.... Once u remove the mirror, you can access everything inside the mount.... I'd suggest u remove the glass and ck behind there.... Might be able to clean up the corrosion and clean things up....

I recently had the same issue and sent both mirror arms and bases to Spacecoast Plating in Melbourne, FL. They willl not accept unless taken apart. In my case, they took in mine and sent me the same ones that were already chrome plated.

I put everything back together and mounted the mirrors. I would use them again.
