Warning light on 2000 Monaco Diplomat

We flew to Ventura CA from Nebraska to pick up our new (pre owned) motor home. Drove it back to Nebraska and it did great. I did not expect may issues since it only had 15,000 miles.. Half way through the Rockies we had the WARNING light come on.. We continued on home. Once here I read up on how to pull the codes.
It came up with a 278 code.
To make a long story short...
The lift pump would only kick on for 2 seconds.. I unpluged it and hooked up a volt meter and it would show 12v for 30 secs or so.. I powered the pump direct from the battery and it would run but the sound it gave out would fluctuate.. Then I knew for sure I had a sick pump..
Called my local Freightliner dealer and once I gave them the engine info they told me they had two on hand... $450 bucks later and 2 hours of labor (by me) we had it fixed.. No more warning light...

Just posting this for anyone having the same issue..

Word of advice......

Just because a dealer tells you it's a 5.9 cummins engine don't take his word as I did.. Mine has an 8.3. They had it advertised as a. 5.9.

You were lucky in catching this hopefully before it did damage to the CAPS injection pump. This is a common failure reported on the Cummins Forum. Usually the transfer pump starts to leak.

In 2006 there was actually a TSB issued on this problem. Initially Cummins would replace a gasket which is what the TSB describes Cummins then started replacing the transfer pump but then quit addressing the problem, probably because it was costing too much.

I keep an eye on mine and inspect the area anytime I'm under my coach. I also found a shop that still sells the gasket and invested in one that I carry as a spare with the purpose of me doing a temporary fix if on the road until I get home.

Thanks for posting

FYI, in the Owners Forum there is a Monaco title which usually has lots of activity.

I am curious where you bought your rv. We bought ours a year ago in ventura also, drove it home and had a great cross country trip. I forget the name of the dealer but what an awesome trip.

That is a good mistake...

List your coach, engine etc in your signature.

Yes that's where we bought ours. I think it was Anthony that I dealt with. I have to say we got a good price on our coach for the most part but the trip home was awesome.

Yeah! He did good by us. I think we got a very fair price and we are very happy with the new MH.

He held it for me for a few weeks with a small deposit and was a very nice person to deal with.

RV dealers and some owners just don't know .

Part of the problem stems from the HP rating of the Cummins engines in coaches of that vintage . Both the 5.9 and 8.3 had versions rated at 300 HP.
It's kind of nice if you get the 8.3 when you were expecting the 5.9, you get an engine with a boatload of extra torque.
Not great if you get the 5.9 and were expecting more.
