If it's a single platform scale the simple way would be to pull just one axle on the scale, note the weight, pull the other axle on and note that weight. If you wanted you could put both axles on also and note that weight. Don't be surprised if the weights front to rear, don't add up to the total exactly. Tire pressures should be set the same for an axle, i.e. all tires on that axle the same and you will likely end up figuring that the front and rear will be different. Example for mine I use 110 in the front and 105 for the rear. If there is room on the side of the scales to be partially on, it's possible to get an individual axle position weight. That will be helpful when loading in order to try to balance the left-right weights. Don't be surprised if one side weights significantly more than the other. Example empty my right side is 700# more than the left. I put my tools and as much heavy on the left.

Since you are picking up a New coach from the dealer, just tell him to get the weight sheet from Newmar and have him take it to a local CAT scale before you show up to make sure they are inline .

Over the years I have weighed many times on state scales. But, unless they brought the scales to me, and I got out to look when told to pull off, when they told me what a weight was it cost a lot!

I guess truck stops won’t bother with it?

I've never paid to get my corner/axle weights.

I pick a time when the municipal/state weigh station is not busy - I pull off and park, then walk to the operator's office and ask permission. If their scale allows straddling (while remaining level) so I can do left or right side I ask if I can go through twice so I can determine my 4 corners. (First time for front and rear axle totals, second time for front and rear on the right or left. - Subtract one from the other and you have all four corners.)

I usually give the fellow some cookies as he hands me the printouts.

Most of the operators are glad to do it when they know I'm just trying to keep my MH and others on the roads safe by having proper inflation.

Done this in FL, GA, TX. Have never been turned away.

You can Google for local truck scales - many are free as suggested by others who use the scales when the site is closed but the scales still operates.

When my coach was new, I loaded it to as heavy as I would ever have it with full fuel, water and personal things including tools. I then called the WI State Highway Patrol Motor Vehicle Inspection Division and told them what I wanted. They sent a State Trooper with his portable scales and we did a six position weigh. I then adjusted the tag suspension bag pressures and got the second six position weights. We did it in the middle of the street blocking any traffic. There was no charge for the service and he was happy to assist. Maybe your state is as accommodating as WI.

If you can't do 4 corner weighing (which would the best), this is the procedure to follow:

1. Weigh the coach axles
2. Add 5% to account for possible uneven weight side to side.
3. Divide by the number of tires on each axle.
4. Look to tire chart for your brand to find tire pressure.
5. Add 5 psi for safety
Please don't be offended, but I remain amazed by step 5. When I called Michelin they stated ANY over inflation decreases traction and changes wear on the tread - but heck, each to their own.

My rig has a lifting tag. As soon as I lift it to make a tight, slow speed turn the weight it's carrying is transferred to the drive axle. That can be up to 14,000#'s. So yes I do add extra air.

Weigh station rules vary state by state. In Arkansas you are supposed to stop at the weight station if you are in a motor home or pulling a trailer and weigh $10,000 lbs or more. No one does and I have never seen them chasing anyone down.

Couple things it do not agree with here.

2. Adding 5% to the axle to account for uneven weight is a step but not all coaches are within 5% side to side. Best to know the actual.

3. No need to do this. The charts prepared by the tire manufacturers have single and dual configurations.

In our jurisdiction the highway scales are left on when the station is closed. I prefer these as the deck is ground level rather than a platform scale located at most CAT scales.

Having a scale at ground level may make it possible to drive one side of your unit on and get a weight of a single position.

Scale certification methodology ensures that the scale is within tolerance at any location on the deck. This is true at the time of certification but badly maintained scales are always a possibility.

If you weigh an axle and then each end of the axle the sum of each end should be close to the weight of the axle. It will depend upon how level the coach is when you are getting the end weights.

I live in Wheat Country. The local elevators scales are often left on. I have often asked the weighmaster for an uncertified weigh and have always been granted permission to make as many passes as I wanted.
