454 from 1993. Use NAPA Synthetic 10w30 and a NAPA or WIX filter.

If the synthetic isn't on sale or available, as so many things seem to be lately, I use regular NAPA 10w30.

Doesn't burn or leak really. In a season if I have to add its maybe a pint or so. I don't travel as far as most but I would think it would be all of 3,000 miles a year.

I have went a grade higher in the previous MH. That one did burn to the tune of 1 qt./1,000 miles.

Ford recommends 5W20 lately and for heat always use synthetic. Mobile 1 is what I use and recommend.

That is really good stuff too for the summer. I’ll go to that if I can’t find 5w-50 locally.

Is there a 10w30 that’s Heavy Duty too? What filter do you use?

Is your 454 Fuel Injection for 1993? My 1995 460 is the first year I think for fuel injection in the F53.

Napa is where I get my Mobil 5w-50. I make a pickup order online so I can use the 10%- 20% off. I should have went there when they were doing the bucket thing….

Im not sure to be honest. When I go to our the "Advanced Auto Parts" they have a couple options for filters. I buy the one that's a little longer.

We are talking many different engines and vehicles..
I just read a bunch of |TSB's from Ford, GM, such.. They newer oils in 5w-20 are now rated to back fill to the 90's engines.. Easy statement for them.. regardless of testing done, R&D etc.. Easier to say the new stuff works than back peddle and retest an engine or engines out of production and service design for YEARS. Even iof the newers oils are not optimum for the application, the OEMS can care less.. they have moved on and provides us an oil.. done deal..

I can say that in these newer vehicles, with variable valve timing etc, are a bit fussy on oils.., the V10/V8 ford of that overhead design had some tech built in.. The older 454/460 and such are old school motors,, The newest ford V8 for our units has new tech as does many newer V6 and others.
the thinner oils are for fuel efficiency and clean burn to keep the cats happy.. the Thinner grades are also needed to pump up faster and fill the lifters and variable timing devices..
Personally I know how picky many BMW motors are on the oils, even one brand of 5w-30 to another can trigger a code or funny start up.
Diesels have changed also.. You guys with other Diesels, no DEF, but managed like the fords, cats, duramax.. IMO stick with the oils made for that era motor,, they need the gunk in it and the viscosity to hold up..

Newer stuff post 2005 or more so 2010 start sticking to the new breeds of oils as you need.

I spend too much time picking brains of some industry guys and such,, hard to vget good info but you can see trends and change... My source from Phiilips,Conoco has retired,, he was a research petro chemist for lubrication industry,, wealth of knowledge and insight on how economics play the huge role.

Great Reply man and can totally understand what you are saying. I couldn’t use 5w-20 in my 460 V8 no matter what year it is. It just doesn’t seem right to me… why not use 0w16 then lol you might get some extra gas mileage. I honestly wouldn't use it in the V10 either but that’s just me. I’m not saying anyone is wrong or anything. It’s your engine and I think it’s great fun talking about what we all do different and share ideas/advice with all our MH experiences.
