We hear what we want to hear. If someone says "This item is worth $500 to $800 dollars", the buyer hears $500 and the seller hears $800.
We read a label on a filter that says it removes bad stuff from the air or water. We would like to imagine that it removes ALL the bad stuff, as the marketing person who wrote it anticipated. The reality is that it can remove less than 1% of the bad stuff and the claim is still technically valid. We are a strange species when it comes to consumer logic and the marketing people know it.
