Windshield wiper problems

The windshield wipers are infrequently "banging" when they come together while operating. The park position changes each time the wiper motor is turned off. They operate radically different each time they are turned on, varying from from far outside (L-R) to bouncing (banging) when they come to the middle.
What's the problem? What's the solution?

Take the arms off, look inside where they mount at the splines to see if they're stripped, same with the cones on the shafts. Look at the wiper motor mount to see if the bolts are all tight. Look at the arm on the gear box shaft to see if it can move. If it has an adjustable linkage make sure that's tight.

I had that problem. Had to remove one wiper at the cone shaft and reposition which then caused the other one to need repositioning. It is a little trial and error, but adjust just a little at a time until corrected.

One time the knurl wore out and the wiper sweep got smaller and smaller until it didn't move at all. Another time I got erratic, unsyncronized sweeps from both wipers, not shutting off, stops and starts without touching the switch. It turned out to be a ground problem. The wiper motors had a ground wire screwed to the motor body. I made the metal shiny on motor and ring connector and, screwed them back on and everything worked after that

What did the splines wearing off the gearbox shaft have to do with a poor ground?

The last thing I looked at, because it was the hardest to access/work on, was the wiper motor attachment. One bolt was gone. Two were loose. Tightened the existing bolts and replaced the missing one. Several hours of aggravation cured in about an hour. When I was sure that was the issue, took the bolts out one at a time and doped the threads with thread lock. Been a couple years and MANY uses. All's well.

I had the same problem. I ended up buying new arms and blades. I also learned the arms must be tightened to a correct torque I can't remember for sure but I think it was 78 pounds. They need to be checked once in a while with a torque wrench. They work great now.
