Wyoming Class A Registration Cost
One of the states we are considering for retirement is Wyoming. The taxes look favorable, but I’ve heard it can be very expensive to register your motor home. I’ve tried the Park county’s calculator, Motor Vehicles , but it returned $5,800 and I can’t believe that’s true? It’s a 2017 DP.
I’d like to hear from a few WY residents or anyone else who has researched this issue.
Thanks in advance,
—Rod

Why do you believe that cannot be true? It wouldn't be drastically different in Arizona...

Good question.
It’s pretty far outside my frame of reference. In Ohio we pay about $40 per year to renew. But we get hit pretty hard on income, property, and sales tax.
I’ve heard that states without income tax charge more in fees, but still, $5.8 K seems more like a tax than a fee. I’m wondering what the renewal is? I can’t image anyone would spend that much every year for a license plate.

Keep in mind you may also have to deal with a use tax in addition to registration in some states. I live in Louisiana and here anyone bringing a vehicle into the state must pay sales / use tax on it of 9.25-9.75% based on book value, if it is a freshly bought this may be paid in place of sales tax in the originating state, but if registered in another state for over (I think 6 months), before importing to Louisiana it is owed as use tax.
Take for example if I were to live in some east coast state, have a motorhome I have owned for 2-3 years and decide to retire to Louisiana, I would have to pay 9.25%+ of its book value when moving into the state, on the plus side registration here is only $25 per year

My yearly registration fee here in Mordor is about $1K. Based on MSRP and weight.
Which is the suck, if you ask me.

Wyoming applies an annual vehicle tax + a $90 fixed fee for large vehicles. The tax is based on MSRP price and age, so a fairly new and expensive vehicle like a motorhome can easily come to thousands of dollars per year.
This site, while unofficial, has a simple explanation and examples.

We're Wyoming residents, and you have it right that the cost can be perhaps $5,000 for a new motorhome. Wyoming is one of the few states that have an ad valoreum (just like real estate) tax on vehicles. It is based on MSRP, and does go down by a set forumula in the first few years, but never to zero. Stops at about half what a new vehicle registration would cost.

Registration in Wyomimg is stupid expensive, just like a lot of things out here. It’s just the price you pay to live where it’s nice.
I have thirteen vehicles currently registered, it costs a big chunk of my income just to keep stuff licensed.
