Xantrex Freedom 458 vs SW vs other - replacement for 458-25

Hi all and Merry Christmas. The Xantrex Freedom 458-25 (OEM) in my 2005 Monaco Safari Cheetah may have given up the ghost. The charge and pass through functions still work but the inverter shows zero output. I now need to decide whether to ship it off for evaluation or replace it. Shipping and repair could run from a minimum of $400 and up. If I replace, Xantrex has recommender the Freedom SW3012 and a new remote panel (`2k). I do very little boodocking except for the occasional lot docking or for a few nights if A/C is not required. Most of the time we are plugged in except when we are driving.

For those that have already replaced your OEM Inverter/converter do you recommend I buy another 458-25, go with the 3kw pure sine SW or do you recommend a different brand/model?

Look at the Aims line of inverter/charger. I have replaced two older inverters - one on my houseboat and one on my 2005 Newmar MountainAire.

They have worked flawlessly for me.

I had the same inverter and switch to the Magnum 2812 and a new controller. The 458 uses a 6 wire phone line and the Magnum uses 4 wire, the just dropped 2 line. The Magnum is a better inverter I think. I also installed the Magnum Combiner also works great. Mine has been on for 6 years, don't like to reset the microwave clock.

Definitely spend your money on upgrading to a newer PSW unit. Magnum is a very popular upgrade - nearly plug and play.

Magnum used to have a document on their web site that detailed xantrex 458 upgrade scenarios - model matrix, cabling, physical, etc, . Magnum tech support is very knowing in xantrex to magnum details.

I upgraded a xantrex RV3012GS to magnum MSH3012RV. Having the newer technology is well worth it and a better spend of your money. Imho.

I have a brand new SW3012 and I think it is great. It is pure sine wave where, I think, the 458 is modified sine wave. I contemplated the same thing when shopping just a few weeks ago for mine, but am glad I spent the extra money for the 3012.

Just be aware that the Freedeom SW3012 is only 25A pass-through, just like it’s only 25A inverter output (3000W). I don’t know what the others are, but I found out about the 25A the hard way when I popped the pass-through breaker.

My control panel is the basic one, but I can connect via the wireless access to my notebook computer (they don’t have an iPhone app for it), where I saw that it was set for 25A, and the specs say that’s the max.

I have a 30A shore connection, but can’t use all of it. Just something to be aware of.

I went from a 2500rv to the 3012. No regrets. Adapter is 18.00 to hook up the new control panel, a plastic face plate is available also to mount it. The new magnum has dual inputs now. Only their 2800 did back a year or two ago. The magnum has remote voltage sensing which I like. I don't really think they are any better or worse than the xantrex.

You have something wrong, 2 30 amp legs on the passthrough is what the 3200 has.

I have a 3012, which is what the OP is considering. The manual says 24A output, including pass-through. Page 105:

(I said 25A above, but that’s wrong according to the manual.)

I just replaced my 20 year trace 2812 with the magnum msh2812rv and 400ah of lithium.

So far could not happier, I also rewired my breaker boxes so both run off the inverter.

The msh2812rv has dual 50amp pass through. So that’s why I was able to rewire the panels.

I will be testing the hybrid function soon. I am really wondering how an ac unit or two will work on a 20 amp feed. My theory is the inverter will assist with the start and the 20amps will keep them running.

I also see recpro has some new heat pumps that only have a Maximum current: 16Amp. That means I should be able to run one on the 20amp and have power left over to charge the battery. These may be next on my list.

They list Input needed for cooling: 1500W. So technically I could run from battery’s alone but I would think not for long till I upgrade the ah of bats. Also 20 amps 2400 watts is only 600 wats from the battery’s to keep 2 units running.

I guess 20 amps will keep one going all buy itself. I know my 20 year old penguins take a ton more power. So that 20 amp supper quite genny may be in my future also.

Oh to now add solar.........

You are reading a 2012 specs, not a 3012

Our 458 inverter function has not worked for years, since we don't "boondock" it's not an issue. Charge function is fine, just can't see paying for something that wouldn't be used.

I thought we were talking passthrough specs, not battery charger input specs.
