Xantrex RS2000 Inverter
My xantrex rs 2000 inverter/charger has strong 12.8 volts at the terminals on the inverter. Problem is the 120 volt output keeps going from 0 volts to 120 volts. Not throwing any codes just continues to roller coaster up and down.
Has anybody encountered this?

Time to dump the boat anchor and install a Magnum Energy. They are of modern design and the tech assist is great

Is there a load on the inverter? It has an Auto-sense mode that shuts the inverter off when there is no load. It samples every few seconds to see if there is a load, then shuts off again. Tiny loads, like a clock, aren't enough to keep it on. Use the control panel display/switches to turn off the Sense mode and see if the problem goes away.
Get a manual here if you don't have one:

Think Gary is on to it--assume you are talking about inverter mode vs by-pass. If in inverter mode, sounds like load sense option is on. Wont detect this if you have a steady 120v load on the inverter like lights or small applicances but if only a clock radio or something, the inverter will bounce on and off. Check this first before abandoning ship on the inverter eg, dumping the "anchor".....

I agree with Gary. I had the same issue and discovered the problem was in the auto-sense settings, there was nothing wrong with my inverter.

A side note, that 12.8VDC is too high for a float charge. Mine did that(once went to 14.2) and cooked my house battery bank 2X. I phoned Xantrex tech support and was told to unplug the temperature monitor. I did, and the float charge immediately dropped to 12.3 VDC, which is the ideal float voltage, even though the owners manual states 12.8 VDC is normal.
BTW, charge and float voltage is not adjustable for the RS2000.

Spot-on! I have this same model, which BTW is obsolete per Xantrex, and the load sense function does exactly as you describe. I have load-sense turned off, meaning I must turn the inverter function on/off manually. That, IMO is a good thing because when load-sense is turned on, it's using battery power just to monitor for a recognizable load.

Mine is 17 yrs old and works fine, except the temperature compensating sensor issue. It works fine with that unplugged, so I'm good.

Xantrex RS2000
Thanks to all that replied. Found the "sense mode" set to high. Set at 60 watts. Reset to 40 watts. Will see if that works before calling Xantrex to how to disable.

Really doesnt have an application on the RV--IMHO. Recommend you disable it and forget about it.....

There is a setting in the monitor panel to disable that function, it's explained in the owners manual.
IMO it is useless for our needs. I have mine disabled. When I had it on, and set to the lowest level it would switch on/off rapidly when attempting to use the microwave, and still not allow the mw clock to function.

I have the same inverter and I also disabled the sense function. It's problematic. Other than that it seems to work great after I spent about a half hour programming the whole system. Your Xantrax owners manual is a wealth of info and everything has to be set in relation to the battery bank and how you use it.

DD788--do you mean the load sense function is "problematic" or that disabling it is????
