Hey Camp,

The Sports Coach 400 series is Coachman product. You may be thinking of the new Thor Aria that was introduced a few months ago.

Hi USMCRET, I'm with you I generally don't understand my questions either!

Coachman use to make a Tag axle coach that was considered by many and a very good product. They discontinued this coach and no longer produce a coach with a Tag.

A few months ago Coachman did a major change to their 400 series of Sports Coach. They are all 41 feet with a bath and a half to 2 full baths. The also added things Like a slide out front generator, larger engine/transmission etc.

Their intent is to offer the best of the best Non-Tag-Axle-Coach in the business!

My question is, while other coach builders have their non tag coaches at the bottom/entry level of their lineup. Coachman is making their 400 series as the best they build, their "Flagship" if you will. Is there a possible benefit there?

I have always felt Coachman was a "Middle of the Road" type of coach. Better than some, but not up to the level of Newmar, Tiffin, and Fleetwood. More along the line of Winnebago. So Coachman's Flagship is still Middle of the Road in my book. Doesn't make it bad, just not top shelf.

IMO true comparisons cannot be made, especially if you are comparing coaches of different sizes that fall into different price ranges.

It would be great to see the difference in two manufacturers if the size and price were exactly the same. Only differences would be the amenities and build quality.

Hey Crasher, when was the last time you were in a 2017.5 SportsCoach 404, 407 or 408? Rated by RV Review as one of the best 5! But I'm sure they give that to all mid level coaches!

Come on Crasher, Tiffin builds a good coach but are not the only company who does! Or are you of the Indian persuasion and decided to go off the reservation!

You guys tell me... Does a "Flagship DP" make a difference?

I think a flagship ------- fill in the blank is pretty much the same across most products, wether that is Rv's, electronics, cars, motorcycles, rzr's, etc etc. you can watch tv on a basic monitor...you can also watch it in true 4K ultra hd...for some it's worth the massive price increase, for others, not so much...but top of the line to me means more features, more technology, more power, nicer amenities, nicer materials, all of which cost more money. Even though most examples would be made by the same people throughout the product line.

I looked at sportcoach (not a 2017.5), and while nice and having some bling, they r not much different than most other "next step up from entry level dp" (I consider freightliner straight rail dp's entry level...like palazzo, etc). I think sports coach is a level above those...just by the chassis alone. The very low carrying capacity made them get crossed off list for me

Hi gtsum2, The 400 series is on the Freightliner Rais Rail Chassis. Is that the one you mean? I ask because there's another Sports Coach that's a 30+ footer? I believe they may be on a straight rail but I'm jot sure?

I just checked and the Sports Coach SRS are 36 footers and on a straight rail chassis!

Yes, believe they r the srs models? I think the models (like yours) that are on a raised rail chassis, are a step up from "entry level"

To your original question: Does a flagship make a difference?
IMHO, no. They all come off the same line! My Monaco Camelot was not constructed with any less care than the Flagship of that time. I'm not even sure what model it was!
The Thor Serrano was Motorhome of the year, but was not anywhere near Flagship quality. But is was a new concept from innovative ideas. And it was not all it was cracked up to be!
However, you selected your Coachmen Sportscoach product quite a while back, and very carefully so.
So, why the question now, unless you are still second guessing your decision?
BTW, Sportscoaches have a 34% discount from MSRP at the start. I'm thinking there is a lot more room in the deal.

I believe this was pre market crash and before the company was acquired by Forest River.

I have an '09 and it's quality seems on par for upper line at that time except for lacking solid wood cabinetry.

IMO "Flagship" is simply a label. Probably comes from the Navy usage where the ship the Admiral was on. Probably the Admiral picked the biggest, newest or most powerful ship to take up residence on. Could be any ship in the fleet though.

Most of this "special" is about feelings and opinions. As mentioned some think it is about value for money or the most expensive.

However it is a label that will mean different things to different people. If you are buying just because of the label instead of the floorplan and amenities you may be looking for another unit in the near future.

Our 04 Coachmen Santara "C" was considered the "flagship" of their "C's" at the time we bought it new. There was a real difference between it and the lower models. When we traded it for our "A", it was holding up perfectly. We had 3 minor issues that were found on our first trip, which the dealer took care of immediately. We never had any problems in 11 years. It was well built.
In fact, it was sold by the dealer in less that 2 weeks after we traded in December!

Hi Camp, That’s an excellent question and in truth, that I made the right choice for me has been more evident with each passing week. The reason for my initial post had to do with a statement I heard saying “The 2017.5 Coachmen Sports Coach 400 Series is designed and built to be the BEST Non-Tag-Axle coach in the Industry! Where other under 41’ foot Non-Tag is generally the entry level diesel pusher. Coachmen is making it their top of the line flagship!”

That’s what prompted my question Dave, and its winning the Top 5 RV award gave credence to the statement. Like many things we’re told, I was simply curious what you guys thought? And that “Best and Top” are subjective to say the least, sometimes there are grains of truth sprinkled in here and there!

Just curious.
What will your CCC be? 41 feet and no tag sounds close.

You have not got your coach yet is it a flagship who knows or cares after owning it for a few months come back and talk to me. Can you upgrade or is this the best Coachman makes. Would you buy another Coachman? Has factory support been top notch? After 18 months our Newmar has been great. Would I buy another Newmar? This is my second one. Is it a flagship coach coach? Don't know and don't care. After 4 coaches this the best we have owned.
