Help for 6V battery

Hello all, I was asked a question about the 6v battery, the only thing I know about them is that they were used in older cars, they write that you can make 6v from a 12v battery, how to do it? Or where to find 6v batteries

Welcome to the forum:

Six volt batteries are very common and can be purchased anywhere batteries are sold.

It is nearly impossible to make a 6 volt battery out of a 12 volt. Physical structure issue.

You can make a 12 volt battery bank out of two 6 volt batteries. . Much like a flashlight that you put batteries end to end in.

The car industry went away from 6 volt systems 60+ years ago. With twelve volts you get four times the power. It is electronic math stuff.

Wires can be smaller with the increase in voltage. Twelve volts has more push than six. With six volts you can lose less push before you are out of luck.

Many vehicles/airplanes use 24 volts. Golf cars that run on batteries can have quite a range and combination of batteries. Most using 6-8 volt batteries connected in series.

I hope this answers your question. Enjoy the forum.

If you have a 6 volt battery, it should be paired up with another one, creating a 12 volt system.

If you have only one, your missing the other one and most stuff will struggle to run.

For more help, send some pictures of what you have in the battery compartment.

You make it very unclear what you are trying to do. If you have an old car, or tractor that uses a 6 v system any NAPA auto parts store will have or can order the exact battery you need.

If you need a 6 v battery for some reason and are trying to save money because you already have a 12v battery, don't.

My son restores old cars, builds hot rods and customs. Occasionally he will get someone with a "daily driver" who wants to save money but has done an engine swap. The new engine is 12volt start, which requires a 12v alternator to charge, but the rest of the car, heat, lights radio is 6 volts. Typically they used a large resistor, diode setup which was expensive, plus a resistor on many if not all devices they would try and run, and a lot of time to do it.
I recently turned him on to a Renology DC-DC charge. He sets the profile to 12v in 6v out and powers the entire car, less the starting system.

If you are working on a motorhome. All house devices will be 12 v. If you have 2 6v batteries, (which a lot of people use) they would be wired in series to give you 12 volts. If they are bad you can just replace them with 1 12 volt and eliminate the serice connection.
