The idea is to keep the engine in a vary narrow power band, so lots of shifts to do so. It may not use all of the gears. Some of the Ford and GM ten speeds skip gears depending on loads, temperature, etc. This may also.

Wasn't following this thread lately.

But since it started MBUSA has released more info on the new OM654 diesel engine - it will be rated for B20 biodiesel - FINALLY!

It will be interesting to see comments on the new transmission. I had an 8 speed GM transmission that I really did not like at all, and one of the new Ford 10 speed transmissions that feels great. Being a Mercedes, I'm predicting it will be really nice.

That's good news (I think). It would be interesting to know the specific differences, and additional maintenance requirements (if any).
