Wheel sensors on Sprinters

How many of you have experienced a "wheel sensor failure" on your Mercedes Benz Sprinter? It happened on my Roadtrek Adventurous Class B.

A few check engine lights came on and this was the problem. I'm told that it will not only disable your ABS, and electronic stability control, but, you will not have cruise control.

Mine were replaced under warranty at around 2K miles. As I recall I didn’t get a check engine, but saw an ABS light and a message to go to a dealer for service. The cruise control continued to work fine. It started as intermittent in the rain then stayed as a problem after a few hundred miles.

I believe the wheel speed sensor issue applies to most modern vehicles with ABS/Cruise Control/ESP etc., not just Sprinters. I had one go on my Wrangler last week. It didn't disable the vehicle, like some brands do, just disabled the ABS and cruise control. It was overdue for a checkup, and the ABS warning light was the motivation to get it all taken care of.

I recently had the same issue on my 08 Sprinter work van. Scan revealed rear abs sensor air gap issue. I was able to replace both rear sensors without any disassembly. Ok for a short period of time.

Dealer thought sensor tone rings had rusted and needed to be replaced. On disassembly they were able to clean sensor of rust build up. Reassembled and had been fine since.

Hope this helps.

No, I wasn't disabled

It was an intermittent problem, but, as a precaution I had both rear wheel sensors replaced yesterday..... turns out that one of the insulation on the cable got distressed and there was bare wire showing causing a short.

Same problem on the Wrangler. Bare wire shorting.

We had a wheel speed sensor failure on our RAM 1500. Exactly the same symptoms. Several "check" lights went on, ABS feature of brakes was disabled, and cruise control was disabled. It was a pretty spectacular cascade of failure, but they immediately tracked it down to a single failed wheel speed sensor. Repaired under warranty, in a couple of hours on a Friday afternoon.
