Why 2 water pumps for a small V6

How can we explain 2 water pumps system on 3.7L or 3.5L Ford Transit ?

You might try using pictures. Sometimes that helps if the "pupil" is having trouble with a verbal explanation. Good luck!

2 water pumps for a V6 Ford Transit 350HD

There is a sprocket one inside driven by the timming chain
and one outside driven by the serpentine.
