1999 Freightliner XC brake question

As above. How can I tell if I have automatic slack adjusters on my air brakes?
Thank you

Well my 99 XC chassis has them , and I believe they were standard equipment , on motorhome chassis for many years before 1999.

My air brake training book, detailing ( with pictures ) the differences is unfortunately 1600 miles away .

I'll try and dig up pictures of both and post them .

Calling Freightliner's help line with your chassis serial number will answer your question.

I'm sure you have them. The real questions is, are they still working. They need to be lubed or they will not self adjust.

So craw under and adjust them. They should be set for somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 on the adjustment nut. If they are not in that range the adjusters are not working. Google YouTube for step by step directions. Lube the adjusters, most of the time they will start working again over time.

Safety Note: make sure you do it on level ground with wheels chocked parking brake off when doing the rear. The motor home could start rolling if it is not chocked correctly and cause harm or death.

You can check without tools. Wheels chocked, park brake off, full air pressure, have someone step on the brake and watch to see about how far the rods come out of the air chambers. 2" or more is bad. Front or rear.
If one or more is out, get them fixed. Repairing and adjusting brakes on a air brake vehicle are not for beginners.
