2001 XC Chassis old brake shoes good lining

I have a 2001 XC chassis with 45,000 miles on it. The brakes work fine. on visual inspection from the outside of the drum there appears to be significant lining material on the shoes. My question is that these brake linings are 17 years old, I assume. I have only owned it for 3 years. Assuming that they are original, it there a point that i should consider replacing them due to age?

I'm not aware of any age limit for brake shoes. But if they worry you replace them. I was surprised how relatively inexpensive they really are especially if you are doing your own work.

Without examining the face of the lining for cracks ; right now you can only see the edge; you pretty much have to rely on feel and sound.
Otherwise removing the drums is in order , for your piece of mind.

Remember if you do a DIY on the wheels, to pull the drums , lug nut torque is 450 ft.lbs. and re-torque in 50/100 miles.

BTW: I'm sure mine are original, 84,000 miles , drums off with tire replacement last Sept. and all good at 18 years.

There is no "age" for brake shoes. There's nothing in them that changes over time. Our coach is an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT and it's on a Freightliner XC "Evolution" Chassis. Our coach and, it's brake shoes are over 14 years old and at present, have at a minimum of 65-70% brake life left and we have 83,000 on the coach. I'm gonna run those shoes for several more years unless something happens that causes me to change them.
