ABS brakes, 2002 front brakes dont activate same time

Both wheels dont brake at same time. Jerks wheel left then right during hard stop. Or vice versa....

Anyone else experience the same? Modulator or....?

How long since you had the brakes serviced? It sounds like it could be a S cam sticking on one or both brakes.

Is the ABS poping off when you stop hard.

If not, like mentioned, its time for a checkup on the front brakes. S cams, slack adjuster self adjuster function, even brake shoe condition.

Every shop ive been to with the complaint has adjusted and replaced everything else, but never taken the drums off. During test drives to recreate the situation at those times it didnt happen again. I have always suspected the S cams, but rather than insist on drum removals i cringe at the cost and bite my tongue.

It doesnt happen all the time obviously, only those rare occasions.
Before committing to the drum removal, i thought i would fish for others that may have experienced the same.

From one Lt. Dan to another, thanks for the input, enjoy you and twinboat on the forums.

Has anyone checked the wheel bearing end play and ABS sensor depth setting.

I wonder if the front ABS sensor wires are crossed.

There should be grease fittings on the S cam shafts. Have they been greased properly ?

Is it possible for me to check ABS Sensor depth? I do know the RF sensor came out during a blow out. I just stuck it back in to make light go out..!

You need to find the specs of the gap and push it in until contact and back it out or measure the gap with a gauge.

There is a roller on the end of the brake shoe that should rotate when activated by the s cam but over time they don’t rotate as easily and take more s cam movement to move the shoes outward toward the brake drum, causing a delay in brake application.

If it was the ABS sensor the ABS light would probably stay on all the time.

Do you have a way to check fault codes, if so you should be able to get a code on the ABS fault. I had one on my 2002 Windsor and it showed the front ABS sensor gap problem. Pull the sensor, cleaned and reinstalled. Didn't check gap, just drove it and it corrected.

If the brake is not working the ABS may be coming on because it is sensing a difference in wheel speed and trying to correct.

Sounds like you may have a brake problem, as others suggested it may be the S-cam. Have you been lubricatng, mine has a grease fitting.
