Check engine Light cancels Trans shift and Engine Brake!!!

Checking on a Freightliner issue my brother is having - when he hits a bridge section - Bump - and the check engine light comes on -usually he has been able to he disconnects the battery to erase the issue - when he gets the Check Engine light he loses the ability to Shift and use the Engine Brake This is a big deal!

We are in Colorado to see the Aspen and were to head over Monarch pass today - - Not without Brakes or Manual Transmission Shifting!

He has called Freightliner and they say just bring it in the Line appears to be Bad.

34 Y Winney with a 350 and a 3000 tranny 2009

Does anyone have or know of a work around? For tranny shift and or Brakes??????

We have checked every connection cleaned every ground - we are at a loss as to what to do - as Freightliner says it will be a month to get it serviced - so the solution for us is to Cancel and head back to the East.

Suggestions Appreciated, Solutions desired.

TIA,

No Code is produced.

It appears to be a loose wire/Faulty Wire/Faulty connection/ that causes the light to come on and lose connection with the ECM - canceling all transmission and brake changes - causing the trans and engine to just function - do to Standard Programs - No Downshifting - no engine Brake ability.

I know it sounds crazy/(Stupid) - but that's the story.

Those ECM's are just like a Computer (They are a computer) - make little sense to us more experienced (old Fart's) RV'ers

Get the chassis serial number from your brother and contact Freightliner for wiring schematics and diagrams .
2009 should have this gauge package , and this pdf may provide some help .

Note if you don't need the info from Freightliner now you might need it later and Freightliner is slowly discontinuing support of older chassis , so get the info and keep it safely stored.

You can only see active codes/faults on the Freightliner display. If its an engine fault a Cummins shop can use Insight to see past/inactive fault history.

Also being it effects transmission it could be a trans fault. Have you done transmission diagnostic check using the shift key pad.

Also it could and sounds more like an ABS fault.

I would call a Cummins shop and ask when they can read you fault history. Then you'll have something to go by.

OK - Brother is a pretty good mechanic - found where there are some dead end connections that need to have the proper Ohm resistance - one was capped wrong - cleaned and replaced the end cap and the Codes all cleared - Drove it to the Next CG and all was fine we will see.

If this worked will report back with better results.

Thanks for all the advice,

Thanks for the reminder - We have traveled out of Colorado and are now in the Black Hills, Custer, SD Traveled some pretty good grades and everything continues to work - Also have hit some Bridge Transitions that are like jumping the Curb so things - if they were to shake loose would have - in the past they slightly harder than normal transition would have bounced it into check engine causing the cruise and exhaust Brake to not function.

Location of these dead end cables with special Grey Caps for the Ohm Resistance are directly under the ECM on the Cummins 6.7 350 in his Winny.

When he pulled the "Last" one it was not in straight he cleaned it and got it to Go in Straight then Taped it and Wire tied it to not move - Curing the problem.

While this all has been interesting it is surprising to me that this has not happened to other on the Forum - as it seems so Simple once it was discovered.

Pictures are of the ends he found - this is after literally cleaning every connection that has anything to do with the ECM - IMHO this is a REALLY BAD DESIGN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks again to all who contributed - hope no one finds themself with this issue
