Check Engine Light Code from dash?

Hello,

I've got a 1999 Itasca Suncruiser with a Cummins: 5.9l, 24valve, ISB on a Freightliner XC chassis

1. Is it possible to retrieve a fault code from the dash?

2. If the light is currently off, would I still be able to get the last one?

I seem to remember someone saying that it's possible by reading blinking lights to get the code.

Thank you,
Barney

Freightliner Free help line may be able to answer your question.
1-800-385-4357
Have your serial number handy, when you call.
The code info will eventually be dropped from the engine controller memory. The usual operation in automotive is, after the light comes on , if the problem is not detected on the next 15 engine start-ups, the light is turned off, then after approx. 200 start-ups the info is dropped.
I can't get the flash info from my Cat's ECM. Your Cummins may allow the retrieval of codes by the flash method.

Thanks Skip,

I called them and on the 1999 you cannot get the codes via the the flash method. However the 2000 you can. Figures. Shrug...oh well.

Why kind of OBD port do you have? A reader is not too expensive. I got one for about $150. May be less now. You have to get the correct connector.

My bad , I should have mentioned these web sites in my first post.

ScanGaugeD - Advanced J1939 & J1708 compatible Vehicle Monitor for Diesel Pusher Vehicles : Linear Logic

SilverLeaf Electronics, Inc. | Knowledge is Horsepower

These dash mounted displays are the most popular for diesel pushers.
But you do have to check for the correct connector to your factory harness.
Data link connector is labled " J1587 " in my wiring diagrams; different from all gas motorhomes and diesel pick-ups.

I recommend the Silverleaf software /hardware connected via laptop. I can look at all the codes on my laptop but over 4 1/2 years owning my 99 Itasca Sunflyer , Cummins ISB I've gotten numerous check engine lights (CEL) & codes. None have ever affected performance in any way. I'm thinking of demating the vehicle interface module connectors in the engine compartment & checking the integrity & possibly cleaning. Freightliner will likely tell you to contact cummins. Do you have any symptoms from the CEL?
