Cummins Engine Coolant Hoses

Folks:

I discovered a very small drip of antifreeze on a bottom/rear hose of my 2003 Newmar Cummins 300 which my mechanic was able to tighten and seems to have fixed the problem. At that time, he suggested that I might consider buying water hoses and get ready to do some replacing.

Being that the hoses all look good from the outside, the coach is 8 years old, is it time?? If yes, he suggested working with Freightliner's 800 number to get all the hoses identified and ordered.

Any suggestions on this?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave1956,
Consider replacing the hoses the next time you change the coolant.

Might get the hoses from www.rvchassisparts.com as their prices are hard to beat and it is actually the Spartan Chassis parts dept selling parts for all engines and chassis.

Dave- when I replaced the radiator hoses I used the access freightliner for part numbers and ordered by phone.
Found this article from gates recommending 4 year replacement.

Our DSDP's hoses are 9½ years old and still look and feel good. Will be replacing the coolant again next year so probably should do the hoses too. Not sure about the dash heater and water heater hoses though. They're in the frame rails and won't age as fast but still.........

If you hear someone offer you silicone hoses at what sounds like a high price,...Buy them and you will NEVER have to replace them again. THey will truey out last everything else.

8 years seems pretty young to have to replace hoses, but it depends on your aversion to risk and your budget. There are a lot of hoses if you want to repalce them all - hydraulic as well as water.

It sounds to me like you had a loose fitting rather than a bad hose, so I wouldn't replace just because you had a leak.

I think you are right. I am in the middle of a 600 mile trip and no more drips!

Silicone Hoses

I did a search on Silicone Hoses and found this place online....

Flex Technologies Inc. they have most all hoses to fit any engine. You just need to know diameter and length of hoses. I will replace mine with these next year. They will never need replacing again...

HOWEVER!!
DO NOT USE ANY COOLANT CONTAINING "sodium 2-ethyl hexonate ". Plus the coolant must meet ASTM D6210

This is an acid used in some coolants. It attacks and destroys silicone hoses and seals used in Cummins engines.

This was discussed on another forum with a Cummins coolant engineer. Cummins investigated it after engine failures and finding a gooey deposit in the engines after the seals failed.
