drop fuel tank 1997 Allegro Bus Freightliner

Anyone here drop the fuel tank on a 1996 freightliner chassis to replace fuel lines?

Everything is good to go now but the lines are old and I'd rather do it now than when I'm five or ten years older.

Any how it looks very straight forward with the exception of the filler tube passing throw a small opening in the frame.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Often the filler tube is clamped on a spout on the tank. Loosen the clamp and the rubber filler neck can be removed from the spout.

To bad the filler tubes aren't larger.
It takes a very long time to fill ours up.
Would be nice to have a larger fill hole, so you don't have to have a cup of coffee while trying to fill up.

A lot of times the filler tube IS large enough but, it's the way the tube and all connections are bent and routed that causes the traffic jamb of fuel flow. Ours does OK for the most part but, when it comes to the last 10-15 gallons, click-stop, click-stop, click-stop and finally it's full.

Yes that's the part that tests me.
Not sure if there is a cure for this or not.
Would be nice to have a larger filler hole.

It was, however, the spout was threaded into the tank and passes through a smallish hole in the frame, so it needed to be removed too. replacing the spout took a while since i couldn't see or feel where the threaded hole was and threading it in blind was a bear.

So as for replacing all fuel lines been there done that.

filler neck on tank is about 2" larger hole will not fix your problem. Ensure your filler neck-vent tube doesn't have a dip in it that ends up filling with fuel and unable to vent the air.

The problem is the venting of the tank. I had my tank replaced by FCCC for the slow fill of the last 20 gallons. They installed a modified tank where they had put the vent line on top of the tank instead of on the side. Worked like a champion afterwards even when using the truck nozzles.
Apparently the diesel fuel foams and as the level rises in the tank, the foam blocks the side vent lines.

Mine has a small vent and hose on the top.1/4"
and a larger vent hose that runs along side the filler hose and vents near the top of the filler neck 5//16" ish

I beleive the top vent is so that the fuel system doesnt pull a vacuum as fuel is consumed. The larger vent in the filler neck is blocked by the fuel cap

The additional vent line on top of my replacement tank was about a 1" vent line.

FCCC was going to modify my old tank with a top vent line reverb. It and install it in the next chassis with a slow fill complaint. I believe this problem was resolved in the 2006/2007 production models. My coach was from 2005 at the time.
