It seems that in the CAT valve adjustment threads , it is alleged that mileage ever so slightly increases. How many of these CAT engines has had their valve adjustment done?

My 20006 Disco, has only reports 6.6 MPG @ 28000 miles. No valve adjustment yet although we are planning for one soon.

I get between 6.5 and 7.5 overall on trips around home, such as to the upper Olympic Peninsula, eastern Wa and down to Oregon and all of them have some significant hills. I had the computer downloaded right after I got my rig in 2010 when I took it in to check for flashes and they gave me a complete loadout. It is amazing what all is on that printout for the TOTAl life of your chasis and engine. It showed the fuel mileage with both on the road mileage, 7.6, and total mileage which was all the time the engine was running, idling and driving, 7.2. I just had it done again and we found that the mileage had dropped almost .5 mpg overall. The reason that I had it done was that I have noticed a bit of power loss and some blowbye that I didn't have before. Two shops that I trust told me to run a couple of tanks with Lucas oil additive and then we'd see about doing an oil change a 5k miles and an oil test. Got a couple of 150 mile r/ts on it and a couple of trips to Portland coming up and those are about 300 r/t and then see how it's doing.

Had a 1998 Dutch Star 38' with a 330 Cat and Freightliner. Didn't know how bad the fuel economy was until I traded it on a new 2003 HR Imperial 40' with a ISL 400 Cummins. I never got more than 7 with the Cat and on a number of trips in flat areas like going to Wakarusa or Florida got 9.5 MPG and regularly got 7.5 to 8MPG with the Imperial. The imperial probably weighed nearly 5,000 more. Traded the Imperial off on a new 2011 HR Endeavor 43 with an ISL 45 and it gets better economy than the 330 cat and it weighs probably close to 5,000 lbs more than the Imperial. Maybe that is part of the reason Cat got out of the RV engine business???

Fuel mileage with 330 Cat

My DSDP (3126) runs at max gross all the time, 31000 Lbs. Also, when moving, it's towing the towed, right at 4000 Lbs. So we're down the road at 35000 Lbs, which is 106 Lbs/hp. For over 20000 miles cruising at 1700 rpm my average has been 7.5 mpg.

I put about 45,000 miles on my Dutch Star with a 330 Cat. Ran it at about 57mph. Got about 7.5 mpg.

Me, my belief is simple. If you worry about mileage. Then you should not own a Diesel Pusher. Stick to the Class "B" size.

Mileage and weather

Don't know how long you have owned a MH but I have since 1972. What I have found over many years is that RVers talk about fuel economy the way farmers talk about weather. It is just something to talk about but no one can do anything about. If one wants economical transportation, they should consider an electric car, not a motorhome!

Comparing any post 02 MH with a pre 02 is not fair. Doesn't matter if it is Cat or Cummins. The pollution junk on any post 02 engine cuts into the MPG.We had an 02 Bounder with the ISB. Best I ever got was 9.5 driving under 65 MPH. Our 05 Bounder with the C7 got 8 to just over 8. Anyone claiming over 13 mpg either needs a new calculator or is a fisherman.

Chinewalker, Just curious about your post and a bunch of others in this thread. Except for those who actually pulled the mileage out of the computer, is anyone running a generator either under way, or boondocking? Since it comes from the same tank, baring using a computer system, just figuring mileage off of the odometer divided by gallons purchased could get mighty misleading. Just my $1.89 worth (2 cents adjusted for inflation)

I believe that 7.9 mpg is highly suspect towing a 4000 lb toad. To further comment, when using the genset, your mileage would decrease depending on how long you run the genset.

Our results are about the same as Chinewalker's results (we get about 7.6) and that takes into account 4 hours of generator running per day dry camping. I take the MPG results directly off the engine computer.

Now that being said, I don't know if the engine computer uses the generator fuel in its calculations or not. It may just use a fuel meter on the engine itself and doesn care about other fuel uses.

BTW we have a Honda CRV following us everywhere.
