Not sure if my auto slack adjusters are in need of service, but im having to put a lot of pressure on the brake pedal to keep vehicle from moving forward at stops. Sometimes I just put it in neutral to give my foot a break. Engine rpm is around 500-700 so I don't think the idle is too high. Visual inspection shows brake shoes still in good shape/thickness and no cracks.

I know when we attended the Spartan Class, they suggested three or four hard pushes on the brake pedal when stopped to set the slack adjusters. Full to the floor and release.

It may be possible that you may have overheated them at some point recently and the pads are glazed. Have them checked and you may have to have them buffed a bit.
If you are creeping at a stop, then it's possible your rig isn't downshifting properly.
I had it happen a couple of times and found that my toad braking system was not working and the toad was pushing on stops

This is very serious situation. Get it checked by a Freightliner shop, now.

Did you ever figure this out? When I first starting using air brakes I felt like I had to hold the pedal down hard at lights. I realized with some experimentation that it was only in my mind. The feedback from the air brakes is different from cars and other coaches I've driven. I found I could relax my leg significantly and the coach didn't move at all. It just felt like I needed to mash down hard to get the same feel as other vehicles I have driven.

As others have suggested, braking technique makes a big difference in the way the air brakes feel and respond. With some practice I'm finding that the air brakes are very easy to use.
