Hazard lights

-
Don’t know if this is where I’m supposed to ask a question, just joined, not sure how to navigate yet. But here goes....we don’t believe the hazard lights on our 2002 Newmar Kountry Star are working right. When the lights are switched on and the brakes are applied the hazard lights go out. My husband drove a truck for years and he never encountered this situation. The RV has a freight liner chassis. After a month, we just got it out of a freight liner shop having all the fluids changed and general preventive maintenance done. The hazard lights was on the list of repairs. We were told by the shop that the lights were working correctly. Are the lights supposed to go out when the brakes are applied or should they continue flashing a warning as we believe?

I don't know for sure, but the hazard lights may be the brake lights. They can be on or off but cannot both be on indicating brakes and flash off indicating hazard at the same time.

On a Damon we used have if you stepped on the brake with the hazards on then all you had were the brake lights. Same bulb.

My hazard lights stop flashing when I apply the brakes.

Well,
Some clarification needs to be said here. There's what's called a *2* filament system and then there's a *3* filament system. A two filament system utilizes only two filaments in a single light bulb for THREE operations.

1. Tail lights
2. Brake lights
3. Turn signals/flasher/emergency lights.

One filament is devoted to the operation of the tail lights and is basically a bit dimmer. But, the second filament in that same bulb, has dual duty. When the turn signal lever is in the neutral position on the steering column, and the brakes are applied, you will get that second filament to light up, one on each side of the rear. But, if the turn signal lever is moved to either a right or left turn, then only one filament will light up as a brake light but, the other will be flashing, depending on the direction required.

Now, as stated, that second filament has dual duty in that it's both brake lights and turn signals. And, it has a secondary dual duty as flashers.

But, since the turn lever on the steering column is in the neutral position, and you push/pull the EMERGENCY FLASHER button/switch, now those second filaments are activated to flash. But, because the brake light circuits are the same ones being used as flasher circuits, when the brakes AND the flashers are being applied at the same time, one cancels the other. Namely the brakes will cancel the emergency flashers.

Now, there's the *3* filament system. And that means that, each filament has designated duty. One, as stated earlier, is dedicated to the tail lights. A second filament, normally a complete other bulb, will be dedicated to brake lights only. The THIRD FILAMENT, normally an AMBER LENS light back there, will be dedicated to TURN SIGNALS and FLASHER(EMERGENCY) ONLY!

So, with a three filament system, you can apply the brakes all you want and you won't interrupt the operation of either the turn signals or the flashers due to the ambers are totally separate from the other operations. Hope this helps some. Typically, if you look at the back of a motorhome and it has both red and amber lenses, you will see a three filament system. If you see only red lens's, then *typically* it's a two filament system but, not always.
