Intermittent fuel gauge

2017 Phaeton here. Freightliner chassis.

Fuel gauge works perfectly except…
It gets to 3/4 and starts to act wonky. It’ll go down to zero, low fuel will ding, then it goes back to normal. It doesn’t always go to zero, sometimes it just goes down a little bit and then back up. It will do this off and on until it gets to about a half a tank. Then it goes back to normal readings.

My guess is it is either the float in the tank or a sending unit or a intermittent connection on the wire somewhere. Anyone got some input for me?

Thanks in advance.

I’ll research it down this line, but you have any insight into fixing it? Did you do it yourself, take it in?

It was replaced at the dealer under warranty. I recall they had a hard time on my unit to get to the sensor/sending unit. they were contemplating to remove the tank to replace the sending unit. fortunately, I know the tech and he is very good. he was able to remove and replace it with the tank on the unit.
