Question Proper Wheel Lug Torque?

My 2005 Providence sits on a Freightliner XC chassis. I have 10 lug 22.5" Alcoa wheels. I need to replace my front hub oil and repack my bearings. I tried looking up the torque specs for the wheel lugs, but the specs are all over the place - everything from 300 ft lbs to 450. I have a HD torque wrench, but it only goes up to 250 ft lbs.

Have any of you folks torqued these wheels? If so, do you know what the proper torque is?

Should be somewhere in the 400-450 ft lb range. Consult your owners manual. The good news is you don’t need to remove the wheels to replace the oil bath hubs, nor should the wheel bearings require a “re pack”. New 90w is added to the oil hub by removing the center rubber plug and fill to the full line. This will take several “fills” until the oil level equalizes.

Thanks, you just saved me a lot of work. I was under the assumption that the bearings needed to be repacked when the hub oil is changed. The FL service manual doesn't mention my chassis, but states the ZF IFS chassis bearings need to be repacked at 1 million miles. I guess I missed that part...

You don't have to remove the wheel to change the hub oil ; BUT ; you need to be in a position to either roll the coach forward to bring the drain plug to the bottom or lift the wheel off the ground to rotate the plug to drain .

I prefer to catch the oil in a fresh clean container for each side , then set the container on a strong magnet , if you get any large amount of metal filings on the bottom of the container , then removing the bearings for inspection is required.

I just syphon the oil out of mine with a piece of tubing.

regarding torque, it is stamped into the face of my lug nuts, 450 - 500

I do the same-- almost. Use an old manual transmission pump to suck it out. Drain, fill, wait, top off. Drain again and fill. Doesn't take much oil.


Yes, it does take awhile for the oil level to stabilize, as it has to flow through the inner bearing. Also, be sure the coach is level side to side or you will get erroneous fluid level readings.



Repacking would apply to greased bearings, not the oiled bearings you have.

Approximately how much oil, and what type, is in each front wheel hub?

I see that it should use 90w gear oil.
Just trying to find out how much is needed for each hub.

I fill to the upper line then let it settle then fill to upper line till it stays there. Im guessing a few ounces or so per hub.

That’s a nice looking hub cover, did you install that?
