Brakes, rotors, etc...

I purchased a new-to-me Majestic in April. Took it to a service shop to make sure it’s road ready for camping (and I plan to live in it in about 4 years). Guy said the disc brakes are metal on metal (he’ll send pictures)... told me he’s surprised it hadn’t caught fire yet! So, what do you think this will run, to fix all the brake components. I know NH doesn’t put low quality gear in their 5th wheels. I’m just getting myself prepared for the next phone call from the shop, telling me what the total is. Any info you can send my way, I sure would appreciate it!!

Stacysu -

It depends upon the brake setting whoever owned the NH before you. If he/she set the brake control high, then the NH brakes would engage before the truck brakes, thus slowing both the RV and the truck. Cabbage Pass (do I remember the name correctly?) southeast of you, on the Interstate to Baker City, is "healthy". If one used the RV brakes instead of engine brakes over that pass a half a dozen times or so . . . it would probably wear the brake pads down to metal! Yikes! What are you pulling the NH with? In short, engine brakes are well worth it! So you don't ride the RV brakes!

I think you might find calling Ken Ulmer at NH would be informative. I know the nay-sayers will attack me on calling Ken, but NH will support "next owners" of New Horizons RVs. Since we are on our way to Junction City, I will even mention your postings to Ken and others. I know Bryan will see this too.

Just my two cents,
Ron

I'm surprised to hear that much wear on disc brakes. My 5 year old Majestic has almost 40,000 miles and the brake pads have almost no wear at all. Possibly the brakes were applied slightly for an extended period of time. Maybe the previous driver drove with their left foot resting on the brake pedal? I'd hate to think of his gas mileage...

I would be a bit suspicious of the mechanic's metal on metal claim. Especially when he says it could catch fire - metal doesn't typically burn...

Post the photos on this board when you get them and we will have a look to make sure the claim is legit before you give him the go-ahead to do the work.
