Trucks & Pin Weight

around the end of summer we're going to be looking for a used NH and use it a few years before having a new unit built for us. I've seen some the 40 ft models being pulled by Ram 3500s. How heavy are the pin weights on the 40 ft units?

I'd really like to find a good used 5500 but they seem a little more difficult to find. I can't get my wife interested in the HD trucks and the MD trucks don't seem to carry that much more than the 3500.

Expect the pin weight to be ~21% of the trailer loaded weight. That is what my 41 ft fifth wheel trailer pin weight is based on a loaded weight of 15,040 and towed by a 350 DRW.

Dave&Ginny -

I have a 2018 39' Majestic. The dry Unloaded Vehicle Weight at delivery was 20,560 pounds. The pin weight (hitch weight) was measured at 3,880 pounds. Again, this was upon delivery before we moved anything into the new Majestic. I will also add that the Cargo Carrying Capacity of our Majestic was 4,276 pounds.

I have a 2016 Ford F450 and ComfortRide Hitch.

Just my two cents,
Ron

We have a 2020 Majestic 40’ with a pin weight the way we travel around 4200 . We use a GenY gooseneck hitch and pull with a 2020 F450 . It pulls real well , also depends on floor plan , options and type of finishes .

Don't let anyone tell you to plan on a certain percentage of pin weight. I live about 25 miles from the plant and know some of the people working there and these are custom RVs, not run-of-mill cookie cutters. The percentage can be anywhere between 18 to 26 percent depending on what the build includes. Take a front bath with dual sinks marble countertops and a marble shower enclosure and floors.

Here is an example of what they can do...

Yes it varies depending on layout and finishes. We elected to have thee slides versus four . Also rear kitchen and we didn’t do granite countertops but did corian . Lots of things can lower the weight some but they are still very heavy. Dry weight on mine was 21k or so and max 26500 . We always stayed in the 24k range and our 450 did great. We also went with lithium batteries that save weight but cost more .

Really is going to depend on the actual 3500. A fully loaded Limited model might not have enough cargo capacity left.

Our 2021 Majestic 42, Rear kitchen, has a pin weight of 4850#. That's with a full solar setup, 70 gallons of fresh water. I have a 100# permanent propane tank that is mounted just in front of the rear bumper.

2023 RAM towing chart shows about 5500# of payload for a 4x4 Crew Cab Diesel. But usually those numbers are for the base level truck (Tradesman), not something like a Laramie, Longhorn or Limited.
