I went through a spell fighting the exact same symptoms. Finally figured out a belt on engine loose. My diesel mechanic figured it out, called Spartan for recommended torque and no problems since.

Also, if radiator tank level is low it will activate check engine warning.

My coolant level sender was cracked and fluid was seeping into the wiring harness. The fluid migrated along the harness all the way to the ECU where it caused corrosion of several pins on the connecter .in turn causing a check engine light

Came on while I was travelling and stayed on till problem fixed and code removed.
The corrosionaffected several pins other than those for the coolant sensor causing some weird gauge .issues

Time to buy a code reader.

I carry an UltraGauge but it's not for diesels.

I’m having the same problem? Sometimes it comes on during trips and other trips it does not. All readings are fine on gauges and no code.

Sorry, I can’t answer torque question. My diesel mechanic handles that. He called Spartan to get the answer I remember him saying. Yes, I believe an idler arm was involved. It was the belt running the clutch fan. After thinking more about it I’d be on the road for a while the first part of a day and the temp alarm would go off. It sound off around 212 or 214. Id slow down and the temp would go down and alarm off. Speed up temp go up and the alarm. Took awhile to figure out it was the belt tension. Couple years now problem free.
