First trip and a few lessons learned

We are on our first trip in our TS 41 ME. Got it in December and spent about a month working on it recently to get things working. Here are some of the things that needed some attention.

First, this one was set up for motorcycle in the back. We wanted a car, so I extended the garage, built tracks into the frames, and then had to raise the bed to fit a newer smart car. Have some finish work to do still, but otherwise it turned out great.

The Hydro-hot system was not working, but was able to troubleshoot down to a failed component on the circuit board, control thermostat, and just cleaning of the burner after many failed starts. A few cents in a new re-settable fuse for the board and about $70 for the thermostat and back in business.

I have an intermittent issue with the check valve in the fresh water pump, but have not got to it yet. Can it be changed out without replacing the pump?

The vacu flush toilet was clogged, and yes, had to stick my hand in there after much deliberation.

Many of the switches in the coach have missing labels, or worn off. Have figured out all I think, other than the one next to the mirror adjustment, behind the sun visor switch. It is the same size as the sun visor switch, but has a little yellow light on it.

There was not AV sound system components or TV controller stuff in the coach, and feel proud to have sorted through all the cables to at least get a DVD player and Hard drive hooked up so we can watch movies. Watched our first one last night as we are camped by the Redwoods in Northern Cali.

Have a satellite dome KVH on top, but no box for it. Also nothing other than the TV antennae. I did find the splitter box on Amazon for directing a signal to the front and rear TV, so got that hooked up.

Also, there is air leaking by the top front of door while driving. Tried to adjust the latch plate and it helped, but it seems like the hinge should be adjusted tighter. Not really set up for adjustment. But the seals looks fine. Any suggestions on this one?

Also sewage tank level indicators do not seem to work. It shows between two and three light no matter if dumped or not.

So lots experiences with this thing so far. We sort of just took off without being completely ready and are figuring things out as we go. No more waiting to live our life, even if we are winging it. We are loving the coach so far though. It is huge, and very high quality. Has some age on it but shows well.

Would appreciate some guidance on what switch does, air leaking from door, and check valve in water pump. And the sewage tank level indicators.

Thanks to all. This forum is awesome and has helped me a lot so far.

Look to see if your coach has a pin on the upper angle of the door. It’s an air actuated setup activated when the parking brake is disengaged to pull the door in tighter eliminating air noise. There is a Teflon wedge which engages the pin to suck door in. Had to put a small spacer behind mine to extend the pin enough to still clear the door yet provide enough length for the wedge to engage it.

There should be other post on this describing how others modified their pins. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it mentioned.

Just my two cents.

Thanks, I was looking for a newer mini, Japan import, as I love those cars. I had a couple of them back in the day. Had a Mini Cooper with 130 HP that would do pretty good against the Porches back in the 80s.

But, The smart car made sense as a newer and very affordable car. Also, with the smart car gave us the new nickname for the RV, Smart Ass, for two.

Best guess based on the lighted switch and being next to mirror control.....

Heated mirror switch? To prevent fogging mirrors.

On many coaches these are not labeled... maybe turn it on and feel if heating or warm after a few?

Good Luck!

It does not seem like I have the mechanism you refer to. However, as I was looking for it I realize that there is a latch on top of the door that connects to the door handle. And the strike plate for it is missing. I will need to locate one and mount it. That should help keep the top of the door tight.

Thanks,

Truls

Thanks,

On mine that is the switch for the heated mirrors. The yellow light illuminates when heat is on.

Many of us are working on the door air leak. Paul's RV has a deflector that he mounts in front of the door that several have installed. I have had marginal luck adjusting the top mechanical latch and adding extra sticky back foam tape to the inside of the door frame.

Depending on the brand water pump you have it may be possible to gain access to the check valve and clean any debris that may have accumulated.

I installed a See-Level system for my tank sensors and have been very happy with the results. https://www.google.com/search?q=See-...rums%2Ff274%2F

Here's a pic of the striker plate.

Thanks a lot for the reply, and the picture of the strike plate. I can rig something up from that. I'll try that first and see about the deflector after.

Try using "Happy Campers Extreme Clean" in both your holding tanks. That may help greatly with your monitors.

Almost back home in WA and we have had a great trip. And we have fallen in love with our Travel Supreme. It feels like home, but we get to experience all these great things along the way.

But, a new issue has come up. House batteries not charging when generator runs.

It is new in the sense that I made sure the generator ran, an I serviced it, but we haven't had to use it until now, as we are boon docking several days as we get closer to home. Casinos, and s golf course part of Harvest Hosts.

So, running the generator I don't see an elevated voltage on the panel. I am sure it is something stupid, but figured I'd ask here since you all have been so helpful so far.

We made it down to Yosemite along the coast on the way down and central Oregon back up. Loved Tahoe. Probably a couple thousand miles on the big rig and around a thousand on the Smart Car.

Thanks,

Truls

Make sure the genny's own circuit breaker is turned on. It's located on the genny, at the front near the top next to the start-stop-prime switch.

Thanks, yes, it was the circuit breaker. I had a chance to look around earlier today.

After doing some research I am still not sure if it is supposed to charge the house batteries off the alternator, but that would seem like a good way to go when you go a few days between hook ups.

Thanks again for the response and to the forum,

Truls

House battery charging, from the alternator, is a standard feature on almost all motor homes.

If yours don't, something is wrong with the battery isolation system. The large solenoid in the isolation system is the most common item to fail.
