Flaking Clear Coat

I have a 2005 45 foot Travel supreme select. In the past year am having problems with clear coat flaking off in areas where the sun hits the most. The front roof cover and down the awning cover. Has anyone encountered this problem and have you tried to correct. What is the simplest approach?

Your Clear Coat is now about 15 years old. So, it is beginning to fail.

The most simple approach is to have paint shop fix the peeling portion and perhaps also apply clear coat to the whole rig.

Simple is not necessarily cheap.

I have been battling peeling clear coat for 10+ years with various self fixes including DIY paint and clear coat application. The above is most simple and perhaps most lasting.

Regretfully, you are not alone with this issue, as most of us have walked out to discover it - some more than others.

Is it a simple issue to solve - NO

Reality is it is a lot of work - Sanding - Priming - Sanding - more filler primers - then repainting - finally re-clear coating with a good two part clear coat - then applying a Second Coat - Compounding - polishing and there you go - I did the roof of my Coach on just the front - took all week for a 5x8 area. -

In my case I could not locate the exact matching paint color on line and ended up using a very close Rattle can from Rustolium - turned out pretty good for these old eyes.

Last minor note - all of this is done at a height that requires Scaffolding - PITA.

I'll include a few Pic's - which while the final result was far from Perfect it sure looked better than all the Pealing/Flaking Clear Coat

Note here that the 2K Clear Coat does not go as far as advertised and actually requires THREE (3) Coats for a good job - JMHO

I took a different approach to weathered clear coat on our '07 Jayco Seneca, top cap.
Chipped her down as much as possible and had it "wrapped" in carbon fiber film.
Four years on the road (15 K) and it has held up well.
One note, DO NOT WAX this material, as it will turn up the fibers, and you will have a mess...........
I use dish soap (Dawn) and water only, and the bugs just fall off.

From what I read about Clear Coat the combination of age and prolonged exposure to solar rays guarantee problems. I purchased a used RV that was exhibiting the preliminary stages. The purchase date was closely followed by the quarantine imposed by Covid 19. By the time we arrived to accept delivery, it was becoming obvious the leapfrogging travel restrictions were an obstacle to extended travel. We parked the rig at the purchase location with the promise it would be relocated to covered parking as space became available. Months later, when inside parking became available, we were provided a picture. Obviously, exposure in a desert atmosphere can cause CC failure.
The online reports of the effort associated with correcting the problem, which is purely cosmetic, have us deciding to live with it and risk being told our rig is too ugly to be allowed entrance in the more exclusive parks.

Yes I have a 2005 Select with clear coat Failure.....Would Consider Getting it Painted However Has the Paint Products Evolved to a Point where this is No longer a Problem ?

Has Anyone ever Wrapped a Entire Class A ?

Annual waxing can help with the oxidation of the clearcoat.

No the Clear Coat will always deteriorate when constantly exposed to the sun. The original paint on my rig lasted about 12 years before some peeling. At 26 years the side wall two part paints are still intact.

I have read that vinyl wrap will deteriorate in 7 to 10 years.
