Water Hose Reel

Iím hoping that someone here can offer a solution to repairing my water hose reel which isnít in tension anymore . I developed a leak at the elbow and when I pulled the hose out all the way to get to the elbow and repair it, the spring loaded reel essentially removed all the tension at once violently which looking back could have broken my arm very easily if not severed it thatís how violently it removed all the tension at once. Have any of you experienced this and if so what did you do to repair it or is it a loss cause? Tried looking up a solution within this forum and was unsuccessful. Attached is a picture of mine which should be the same as those on here. Thanks in advance for your help!

I have not been inside that unit. My guess is the lock mechanism either broke or is loose. I would take the end off where the lock is located and see if it can be tightened and tension reapplied.

I did have a leak problem at the elbow and spent a couple weeks trying to find a replacement elbow with no success. Ended up gobbing (technical word!) a couple layers of old fashion fiberglass mat and resin around the elbow to stop the leak. It sure isn't very pretty but it doesn't leak and it is stronger now than before.

The things we do to keep these antiques on the road! That being said I was talking with a previous Travel Supreme owner who now has a 2019 Cornerstone. He told me to hang on to my TS as it is the best built coach he has ever seen!

Jeff, haven't had this problem but from past experience it sounds like either the spring broke or came loose from the winder. This just happened to the main spring in one old German clocks and totally destroyed the gearing.

Recommend that you carefully removed the end cap and visually inspect the unity. From what you shared I venture to say that the spring in completely disconnected from one end. Check the gearing to insure no teeth were destroyed. See if you can attach the spring back into the slot provided - If you can the next step is to attempt to manually apply tension to the spring. If you can you will need to tighten it up as much as you can since the hose is all the way out. If you have wound the hose back up manually prior to reattaching the spring you may be able to use the hose to apply the tension needed by pulling it out again. I would then rewind it manually and pull it out about 1/4 its length to finish tensioning the spring. Roll her back up electrically checking to insure all working right.

If you can not reattach the spring you will need to check with the manufacturer to see if replacement part is available. May be better to just purchase a new one and install it.

Hope this helps - Richard

Once he gets the end cap removed it should be obvious if the spring or the latch slipping is the problem. We don't have electrical assist. The hose mechanism is strictly mechanical and it had maximum tension when he fully extended the hose which obviously caused something to let go.

Water Hose Reel

Well as luck would have it, I was able to pry apart the plastic housing which was held together with pop rivets which was a bugger to remove but patience paid off. Once I removed the plastic casing it was evident that the end of the spring had come off the wheel (Attached pictures).

I then took the socket and placed it over the end of the cog and wound it up as tight as I could with the latch in the locked position and held it together in place and quickly placed the plastic casing back into place and bingo it worked! I then replaced the pop rivets with screws to hold it in place and then took the socket and tightened it down some more for additional tension.

I looked on-line just to see what a similar hose reel would cost and I just saved about $350 which I could use for additional camping equipment. It pays to be a DIYíer. Thank You guys for you input which is invaluable.

Bodean56,

GREAT!!!!!

Glad you got it fixed. Thanks for sharing the info and pictures.

$350.00 will go a long way; except for diesel. (LOL)

Stay safe and enjoy - Richard
