Wiper issue

On my 06 Select I'm having a wiper problem. While setting still or slow speed they run OK. Not great, but do work. However, when driving highway speed they'll "lock" up at the furthest point of extension. When I pull over my resolve has been to pull relay in electric box for them to return to off position. Can anybody shed some light on possible cures?

Can you get to the wiper's mechanisms. You could have worn out parts causing them to get stock with wind resistance. I'd check there first, then the electronics.

I believe you're correct. Just setting still the wipers will work OK for several minutes, but with wind speed against them they lock up. I'm thinking about applying hand pressure at the furthest point when setting still and operating to see if I can simulate the event.

The nut that holds the wiper motor may be loose, tighten that nut on the outside of the coach. This has happened to me before.

The fitting underneath the wiper is coned shaped and friction fit the wiper to the right spot....if they get over tightened, etc - they may break. I have ordered 4 extra for emergencies....

Yep. Been there & done that. First time I thought they were loose so I tightened. Ended up to tight and broke the casting that the cone fits on. Ordered new wiper arm and extra tapered cones from DJ Specialities, but he's closed shop.

Does anybody know if the wiper system is Spartan or would TS installed them?

Pete,

You can find just about every wiper part ever made at Mill Supply Inc:

Stepvan Parts Catalog

I replaced the cone shaped knurled drivers last year and they can be found in two sizes here (IIRC mine were 3/8"):

Grumman / Morgan Olson Wiper Parts

I got mine from D&J....If you order from mills..carefull. I just ordered two small plastic wiper washer spray heads. Very small - 2 parts less than $4.00 - very light weight. Estimated handling and shipping $14.00 - UPS ground...hopefully the shipping won't be 3 times the parts.....If you overtighten the wipers - the pressure can split the cones....I do not know what they should be torked to. Looks to me sailor_lou has the right link as the parts pictures look right.

Lou:

What is the length of your wiper blade? I went to the website you posted and noticed the sizes listed are 16" thru 22". I'm going to check my length tomorrow, but I'm thinking they are more around 28".

Dale, I had the same problem on my '07 Alante. Replaced blades, wiper arms, pivots, knurled nuts, etc but the problem persisted. Even tried 28 in. Blades to lessen the load. Never got it working so traded the coach! LOL! I'm thinking it may be a misaligned linkage issue with a too-small motor to overcome the mechanicals. TS would have installed this system. If you look at the motor you can see the part number of this system made for TS by an outside vendor. Can,t remember the name, but no longer in production. I think the only other option is to retro fit another system.

Dale,

I only purchased the cone knurled drivers and cap nuts from Mill Supply and IIRC the shipping was high as DA_BUS identified, but they were the only vendor I was able to find with the parts. My wiper blades are 32" and I got them from RVupgradestore.com:

TRU Vision TV8-32 32" J Hook Wiper Blade

I have read where others have gone to a 28" blade due to the availability and lower price with no noticeable loss of visibility so that is always an option. However, in your case I question if that is really the problem. I would start by checking the linkage for binding at full travel and lubrication all the moving parts. On my rig with the genset fully out and a bit of body contortions I can get to all the piece/parts. I would spray everything that moves with silicon or a light oil. I've never had the problem you are describing so I'm only guessing here. Good luck.

Update: I've done adjustments, sprayed the linkage and came to the conclusion it had to be the motor. Since I was going in for a engine/generator service I turned it over to my mechanic. His independent conclusion was the motor was malfunctioning as a load was placed on the wipers. Now, I'm not for sure if I'm saying it right, but it's like the motor weakened as it warmed up, maybe "amping out"? Anyway, he put a new motor on it and adjusted the linkage/wipers. It worked fine driving home, but I didn't want to run it on a dry cycle for too long. I'll definitely know the next rain! Hope it's fixed.
