According to the Cummins Quick Start sheet that came with mine oil change intervals are 20,000 miles or 12 months. It says nothing about 1st oil change and specifically says no break in oil.

12 months and/or 15000 miles was the read for first change the Spartan folks said. If you're below that 15K and sitting still(like for the Winter), they said changing at 14 or 15 months as you head of Winter campground is OK.

I just had a mobile oil change guy come to where I store my RV and I had it done at 12mos/14,900 mi. Just for grins I took a oil sample and sent it for analysis to see if everything is breaking in okay. I used Blackstone labs. $25.

Good news.

Blackstone labs sent me the analysis of the results of my first oil change at 15K and the results were good for a new engine. Here are the elements that were above normal but the lab thought okay for a new motor.

.................My Results.....Normal average
Aluminum.........6............. 2
Chromium.........2.............. 0
Iron................62..............22
Copper...........214.............5
Silicon.............24..............4
Lead.................6...............1

This is just me and I know it is not what the book says. I will change the oil after our first trip. I am old school, and I still believe metal partials are still in a new engine. I just went through the experience of what a filter "may not do" if run to hard with contaminates being forced through it.

I do my own oil changes so I will also replace the drain plug with a Fumoto F-106N Engine Oil Drain Valve : Amazon.com : Automotive.

Easiest way I have ever used to change the oil. I keep my gallon jugs from the last oil change, then drain the oil into them and return them the Walmart. The first oil change is in a 5 gallon paint bucket with a snap on lid. It also goes to Walmart. After that the gallon jugs are easier to handle.

Again, just me and not meant to offend anyone by sharing ideas.

I've posted on this before but no offense...stop being old school....your Diesel engine stopped being old school 15-20 years ago already. Don't over maintain and under use your engine...gen..systems. The are many reasons not to short change the oil but overly excessive changing can actually damage your engine....waste money.....waste environmental resources ect..ect.

Relax...enjoy your coach and follow the book. No harm will come to you. Many over the road rigs are going as much as 100,000 miles between oil changes (they sample and change the filter per the book intervals) Once a year changes are enough for almost all RV owners.....depending on your engine its between 15-20k miles -or- one year. Whatever comes first. Trust me not matter what an RVer does you can't hurt the engine in the coach or gen. The most severe duty RVs applications don't even come close to what these engines are designed for.

To my knowledge, all manufacturers make it clear that when specifying oil change intervals between mileage or time, it's which ever comes first.

If you don't put 10-15K miles a year annually on your coach (average for most folks is closer to 7K miles per year), then be sure to change your oil at a minimum of once annually. If you put more miles on per year, then change at the mileage recommendations by your diesel engine manufacturers.

Again, everyone is WELCOME to do it their way and by the book, no offense to me. On my engine, I will change the oil to get rid of ANY metal contaminates that MAY be there during the break in period. For $85. in material, I won' take the change. Again just ME!

I probably won't out live the Cummins Warranty, but I will not be in the shop during that time period ether. Again, just my preferrance, others my vary.

Not a problem! I would enjoy sharing the time with you. Shop the filter price on the internet and Rotella is $11.97 a gallon at Walmart., We will do the generator at the same time as soon as I learn how to do it on the new one.

You will like the location, I am at private Air Park with a 4,000 ft runway
