For those of you with the Anthem, does your smart wheel light up? Mine does not have the backlighting and thought it should.

In our 2017 it is lit when the headlights are on.

My wheel came to me new from Middlebury with the backlighting not working. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your view I had some major other problems with the coach that required me to go back to Middlebury, and they fixed the illumination problem while there. I have no idea what the "fix" was...... but I am pretty sure that it was a wiring problem in the wheel itself and not a replacement of the entire wheel.

Most of us don't drive a lot at night including me, and it was not until I was stuck on an Interstate for 7 1/2 hours waiting for a fatal car/semi/semi fire crash and we did the final section of the trip after dark. It was not nice.... I had not memorized where the main buttons were located and it was a real mess driving.

I had my wife get me a headband LED light which I wore the whole time and could turn on and off easily and safely.

Finally figured this out, the switch between the head lights and the fog lights control the brightness of the dash lights and the smart wheel lights. I was told a couple of weeks ago that they did not light up. Glad I didn’t listen!!!

The Smart Wheel communicate down through the steering column via 4 wires in a clockspring to allow for turning the wheel. Two wires connect to the SmartWheel controller module and handle all of the communication between the controller and steering wheel buttons. The other two wires are for backlighting of the SmartWheel buttons. These two wires are generally connected by each manufacturer to the dash lights circuit and a ground and are controlled by the dash lights dimmer switch. If your SmartWheel doesn't light up (at night - will be hard to see during the day) the odds are not that there is an issue with the wheel. It's most likely something not connected down below in the dash wiring.

After a few months thinking the wheel didn’t light up I stumbled upon something else that ‘fixed’ my 17... I like to keep the dash lights fairly dim to minimize glare... well, in my 17 the wheel lights turn off long before the dash lights are fully dimmed. I had to bump my dimmer setting up a few notches before the wheel lit up. So much better though now I have the buttons memorized anyhow.

That is exactly what I did. The lights on the wheel do not match the brightness of the dash. I didn’t bother to explore it because the dealer said it didn’t light up !
