AC Return Air Filters

Some time ago there was discussion about using some readily available material cut to size for the return air filters instead of cleaning the foam filters.

Now I can’t find the information and did not see anything in Lowe’s or Ace Hardware or Amazon.

What am I looking for and where do I get it?

At Lowe’s, look for vent filters. These are for floor vents in a regular house.

Brobox posted his solution but I could not find it either.
Hopefully he will weigh in. I want to have back up ones on hand.

Courtesy of Brobox!

I haven't tried this myself so I can't offer a personal endorsement, but, it looks like it would work!

Take care,
Stu

A filter for the typical window air conditioner will work also. Buy one that's a bit too big and cut it to fit. I could get two out of the ones that I was using.

Here is the same product Brobox recommends but from Amazon for those that don’t have a Home Depot nearby. ($8.18 v $4.35)

I’ve been using these for years. Works well - put the ones I changed into the washing machine.

One tip for those who maybe traveling in country with fires, is to get a high quality house HEPA filter. Cut it to a little lager the the bottom return grill, an then blue/green tape it into place. Sure, it looks funny. And sure, it does reduce airflow (And noise as a plus!), but we'd close up our coach and run either the AC or just the Fan if it was not hot enough to warrant AC. This made a real difference for us when we were in very smokey conditions and for various reasons, could not head out of the region. We keep a few ready at all times, stored in some plastic bags and ready to grab as needed. And know, they are not a 'decorating' plus for the coach... But within 15 mins of filtration, eyes would stop being impacted from the gunk in the air from fire smoke...

Best to all,
Smitty

Here you go. $4.25 a dozen. Lynn is correct, I now use the washing machine as well. https://www.homedepot.com/p/4-in-x-1...VENT/100351670

Mark, I found a sharp filet knife would cut 4 stacked at a time using an old filter as the straight edge. It worked better than the first ones I cut with scissors.

If you have the new return system with two returns per a/c the 4x12 filters will not work, not nearly large enough.

Thanks everyone for the great information. I’m glad I asked. Looks like I will be heading to the fireplace area today!
