Air filter replacement

Has anyone changed their air filter? Looking for pointers. It is located behind the coolant reservoir and looks challenging to get to. Do you remove coolant reservoir or can you remove the top outer metal shell to get to it easier. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Chad,

The air filter is on the other side. Clean throughly around the inlet and outlet prior to removing the canister. Loosen the band clamps and work the rubber seals loose. To get the filter out I found that removing the bolt that clamps the oil filler tube in place helped with a little more wiggle room.

If it's behind the coolant reservoir then access is likely through the bedroom. Our setup is that way. Even if you remove the reservoir there likely still is not enough room to get it out. Beside that you'd have to remove all the coolant in the reservoir plus extra in order to get it out of the way. You'd be looking at a couple of hours labor that way while through the bedroom it might be a 1/2 hour job.

My mistake. Sorry for not being specific. I am actually referring to the Onan generator air filter. Thanks

Yes, you need to move the coolant reservoir, it isn't hard to do. There are a couple of bolts you pull out then slide the reservoir out of the way. You don't need to drain it.

It comes out easier too if you remove the fill cap...that little bit of clearance makes a huge difference. Have a bungy cord handy to hang the tank out of the way once it is free. Also easier if you remove the top two bolts that hold the actual filter canister dropping it down an inch or so makes a straight pull to get the filter out.

WIX Filters - Products Catalog Home Cross check your filter number here, use the last four numbers to make it a NAPA part number, usually about half the price of a dealer.. probably a NAPA 6449 but check they do make changes.

Very easy service...enjoy
