The part you see inside is a normal part of the female connector. It is the check valve to close air when not connected.
I suspect the coupling lock was not fully engaged and male end was blown out. While driving the male end was knocked off the hose. Mine get sticky at times and the lock sleeve does not fully slide into position. I now lubricate and double check every time as mine popped free once.
