Plastic fuel filters

Hey...Was it the filter...or the filter base that cracked on the OP's coach? I am just asking. MOMCAT

I had the same confusion initially..... Dave is going to need to come on here and clear up that one issue, and I am sure that he will.

From discussions with other members, the secondary fuel filter on the Cummins 450 is plastic and they have been known to split. A field fix of changing the filter solves the problem and why that filter really needs to be carried s a spare.

It was the filter that developed a crack, about 1 inch from the top. I don’t know why and it’s never happened before.

There’s been some discussion about pre-filling the filter, or installing dry. I always try to fill my filters about 75%. I don’t fill them completely because in doing so I lose the oil that I place on the Gasket. Without that lubricant on the gasket, you can’t get the filter tight.

If someone tries to put a filter on dry, it takes around 26 key cycles to get enough fuel in the filter to run the diesel. That’s turning on the key and waiting about 30 seconds before cycling the key again. It takes about 30 seconds for the fuel system to purge each time.

Typically I can change both fuel filters in about 25 minutes. But under normal conditions, the metal filter gets changed about twice before I do the plastic filter since the metal filter with the water separator filters the fuel first.

I think I’m going to do a video showing how to change the fuel filters. It’s not hard and everyone should be prepared for an emergency.

In 2014 there was a recall on this filter as the were splitting at a seam. It seems the problem of leaks developing was not correct 100%.

Is there a metal cummings filter with the same specs that you cam replace that plastic filter with?

All of the cross references, even Baldwin show a plastic filter.

I carry a spare set of fuel filters, belts, Onan ff and fp, def filter, def head, a gallon of fuel to prime the engine FF's as well as a drain tube to drain the basket. Since I had to replace my tow bar, I have spare parts for that as well.
