Another Newbie Confession

When the weather guy says strong wind warning, take heed and stay where you are an extra night (you'd think a former weather guy like me would BELIEVE).

Enjoyed 25 with gusts to 35-40 MHP today in West Texas

Put another way, the next time I think I'll man up, I can handle it...I'll look back at this post and remember. Saw four semis overturned over the last 75 miles today.

Sometimes it pays to tuck tail and run. Glad you and the misses are OK.

Glad you are OK.

Years ago my father told me something that I've never forgotten. I was 16 working on my private pilot's license, going on a solo cross country flight. He told me that before starting the return flight to check the weather and if it was questionable, stay where you are. After all, he said "don't be in a big hurry to get to your own funeral!"

We've spent many an extra few days, hunkered down in a campground, with the coach a rock in', waiting for high winds to pass. ...and with the slides in so the wind doesn't rip the slide toppers.

Meant to include this url for wind, for those of you that haven't seen it:

Wind Map

Really a neat depiction. Does NOT address gusts, but the more white the stronger the wind, and of course gives you the direction the wind is moving.

Specially if it's a tail wind. You could've got 18 to 20 mpg today with an ISX.

Or headed back to FL...damn the cold.

And by the way TerryO, born and raised in western OK, Masters Thesis on the low level jet in the southern great plains...and most of all...

What are talking chains for when the drill stem on those drilling platforms were swinging in the wind...now that's a blow!

We actually had quite a few empty 10k gallon tanks on their sides rolling around today. Nice! On the 6 o'clock news they showed a 3 bedroom home buried in tumble weeds, could hardly see the house.

TerryO,

We're staying in Midland...and I can confirm that there were a lot of tumbleweeds blowing. Saw a couple that looked the size of a round bale of hay.

Also saw four trucks sitting on there side. News said earlier today you had 60-65 MPH here. It had died down to maybe 15-20 when we arrived here.

That's the one I posted above. Being a meteorologist (no catty comments pls), I find that visualization really neat. It'd be better in color, but noone paid these guys to develop it...a neat product. I really encourage you all to use it. It was right on for what we experienced moving from Midland TX today to Terlingua and the Big Bend area.

And, by the way, if you haven't been this way, it is a majestic desert ride down from Alpine TX. We're staying at Lajaitas in the Maverick Ranch RV Resort...thus far a nice place...and for a first, the wi-fi WORKS AS ADVERTISED.
