Another Radiator??

I really hope that this isn't how radiator failures start, but found this while walking around the coach. Wet spot is under the rear corner of radiator. Its also wet on the corner were the radiator drain is located. All clamps look good and tight, nothing appears to be broken. No signs of leakage around hoses or clamps, but being on my back in tight quarters doesn't help with looking around.

Since new I always added fluid and while at Spartan, little over a year ago, they told me that they found a leak and repaired it. I have always watched the window for the antifreeze and, at times, it needed to be topped off. The coach has been sitting for little over a week, on pavement, which is good because now I see a spot.

Will be calling Spartan to have a pressure test performed. Since we'll be heading north to Ocala FLA soon. I'm hoping that the Cummins repair shop will be able to take us in and pressure test the radiator.

Always seems to be something I need to mess with lately....

From the picture it looks like the drain valve is leaking. Using compressed air or something else dry the area and see if the coolant is coming from the fitting or petcock.

This is the area for the “classic”leak. Lower rear or front corner. Having to add coolant at times was my first indicator.

About a week ago mine started leaking. My selected repair shop, Massey Diesel, Phoenix AZ requested pictures via Smart Phone. I sent pictures identical to those shown on Steve's post. Massey sent them to Spartan and I now have a radiator at the Massey Diesel shop waiting for me, apx one week
No leak test required. Maybe the rules have changed?

Well let’s hope that what I have isn’t the start to what you ended up with. Will take a closer look at the drain and verify that it’s not leaking, but I did feel around and it appeared that there was moisture up above the drain.

Considering that your Coach is almost new I would request a new radiator. Likely Spartan will replace it if you contact them. Don’t settle for another repair or you will likely end up stranded somewhere away from home

Best of luck!

How is this possible with a 2017? Was Spartan using up old radiator stock?

On my 17 the chassis was built in 2015. I know because I have the same problem as Paul; it just started last Tuesday.

Spartan said send pictures but didn’t say how to get them. Everything appears to be shrouded except around the fan itself. Any tips on getting useful pictures?

I took the picture from outside and thru the back lower corner of the baffles in front of the radiator. Shined a flashlight on it. This is what I sent the repair shop and they sent it to Spartan.

Spartan was not that giving with me for a new radiator. I had to take it to a Spartan approved shop for them to pressure test it to show it was leaking with photos before Spartan would ship a radiator. This was when my coach was new. This has been going on with Spartan radiators since 2014.

There lies the problem, the new improved radiators did not ship until 11/16. Apparently they did not update existing chassises.

You can take pictures through the outside vents, also in the corner underneath the coach.

So I guess the VIN means s**t when you run it through Spartans VIN decoder!!

Checkd my VIN number and it shows that the chassis is a 2017. Looks like I’m well on my way to a new radiator this spring when I roll into Charlotte for our two year maintenance.

When I had a leak, Spartan advised that the best pictures would be from the inside. So, I laid on the ground, stuck my phone between the fan blades and into the shroud, and took pictures while moving it around. A little experimentation and I got good ones, so only the repair trip was needed, not a diagnostic trip.

Paul, That is exactly where ours was leaking on our concrete pad while in Carrabelle Beach. I took pictures through the vents on the outside and from inside laying on the ground. Spartan would ONLY accept an authorized repair center performing a pressure test AND taking pictures to prove the radiator was defective and not road damage. The total process took almost 3 weeks to R & R and Spartan sent the complete radiator/inter cooler package. Takes about 12 hours so plan on a hotel stay !
