Wow Tom! That was very unfortunate. Glad your insurance covered it. You just convinced me to never leave them out unattended. Thanks everyone for your help.

Who was/is your insurance with? Time for me to evaluate my coverage and not liking what some say the response is with GS's National insurance to claims.

My agent specializes in RV insurance ( Miller RV Insurance in Oregon) and specifically discussed awning coverage.

I'm sorry but I've been following your thread for a while and isn't it totally unacceptable from the manufacture standpoint that they are standing up in covering this or changing the design?

The Girards are nice looking but fragile. They seem to be mounted too high to really give much shade unless the MH is facing the right way and the sun is at a certain height. Can't use them even for the lightest of rain sprinkles or in any wind greater than 5 MPH. We've found them most times to be useless. If I had my druthers.............. They seem to be only a conversation piece because the folks with Carefrees keep asking me what those things on the roof are for while they are sitting in the shade and I'm getting sun burnt.

We actually use ours a lot and find they work fine up to about 15-18 mph breezes. One think that makes a lot of difference, both in the amount of shade you get and the wind they can take, is we adjusted ours to the lowest possible setting without hitting the slide. It is an easy adjustment and really does make them a lot more useful. However, I definitely agree they should be a lot better, tougher and more useable for what they cost, all JMHO

Does 1 bolt bring them up evenly on each awning or do you have to go to the other side of the awning you are working on until they are level, also where is the elusive adjustment bolt thx in advance

The bolt are visible and assessable when you get on the roof at the ends of the awning covers. Think I remember one on each end so you can leave one end lower than the other to help shed water. Not recommending that you leave them out during a rain but in an emergency it will increase your chances of saving your awnings. All JMHO

The adjustments are covered in Girards manual. The rear awning has an adjustment on each arm (2). The front awning has (3) arms so you have to adjust the middle one with the slide in and from underneath. Keep them all in sync.

Our awnings are adjustable with just a wrench on a nut. And I do trust the wind sensor. In fact they sometimes come in with just a light breeze. Luckily I can choose a setting so they will stay out in windier conditions. So far they've worked fine.

Because they are so fragile I have never found my awnings useful. Decorative yes, useful no. The old-school awnings were cheaper, more stout and with better supports having arms along the side of the motorhome.
