Aqua Hot 400-D Controller

I am continuing my war dance with our AquaHot.

My symptom is the unit just randomly shuts down after anywhere from 2-12 hours. I do notice at times when the burner tries to fire some random false starts (sputtering) from the burner before finally kicking in. Anyone else encounter this?

The unit has been properly serviced twice in last 8 weeks.

Another question to the group is has anyone here ever encountered a bad controller box, (the black box attached to the side of the burner)? If so what were the symptoms.

Thanks

Yes Entegra also changed the ignition module. Symptoms were that the green light on the Vegatouch would go out, same as yours, 2-12 hours.

Our temporary solution was to touch the diesil heat button twice and it would fire back up, of course that doesn't help if it's 40 degrees outside and it's been off a few hours in the middle of the night.

Anyway the tech at Entegra did say that both parts were at fault.

We just replaced one in September. In our case the burner would not fire at all. The light on the burner switch was out. I bought one online from HeatMyRV.com. Not cheap. They can be tested by an AH service tech.

Yes, I had one replaced too! Our issue was excessive smoke! The problem was the ignition was late... allowing excessive fuel to be pumped into the chamber before ignition. Initial start was ok... subsequent cycles excessive smoke. Repeated attempts to duplicate failed because each tech installed their remote control device that bypassed the control box.

To the OP:

Did you have to replace the control box? Any other parts to get your Aqua Hot repaired? We are having the same issues as you and others and would just like to know what may be in store for us.

Thanks.

I have replaced the controller box. Only been 2 days, but so far all is good. it seems to be firing appropriately now.

I will provide a followup update next week.

Ours is doing that too. Annoying, especially at night when it's 20 degrees outside and you're on a 30 amp hookup.

I have a tab describing the 3 control units (the black one is the middle one)

It looks like the newest one will try to retire if the fire goes out.
The others just quit.

$900 to find out.

Update

As I previously posted, we were having the same issues with our 450D. We scheduled an appointment to have it repaired this week and I was prepared for a $1000+ repair bill to replace the burner control unit and do an annual service.

Got a call from the shop that Aqua Hot issued a TSB recommending replacing control thermostats in certain Aqua Hot units. Based on our serial number, ours is covered by the TSB. Hopefully this will solve our long ordeal with this issue.

Some of you may have had your control thermostat replaced under warranty, but you may want to confirm that your replacement is the newer version.

We are out of warranty, but we are going to request that Aqua Hot cover the cost of the part.

The TSB is attached.

Are you sure it applies to a 450D? It mentions 250D and 250P only.

It shows 250, 400, 450, 600 and 675 models right in the red box at the top but only the 250's are mentioned in the text. Confusing.

A quick google search showed the item (ELE-014-010 Control Thermostat ~175-188 degrees ) as being part of the entire A/H line of water heater models including the 450's.
Although, as Mr_D and N2zon mentioned, only the 250-D/P line are mentioned in the TSB. I am going to call A/H tomorrow for clarification as my serial #A450-160822 falls into the covered category per the TSB.

D'oh!

When jrugarber calls AH, if they say it's for everything in the red box, as I expect they will, I'm going to order one, just to have it!

I just got off the phone with A/H Tech Support...
This TSB relates to a "fix to fail" scenario, wherein when/if the Control Thermostat ELE-014-010 fails it is to be replaced with a newer version ELE-015-011 as described in the TSB. The purpose of the bulletin was to make A/H Service Centers and Certified Technicians aware of the upgraded part when replacing a failed Thermostat. This is NOT a recall where a replacement would be completed at no charge but more of an FYI when and if it ever fails. A/H did say that it was instigated by a small number of failures prompting the issuance of the Bulletin.
It also was mentioned that the "newer' models i.e., 2019 and later use a different type of sensing unit not related to this item.
It was also stressed during our conversation that it is very "Serial Number" dependent, so if your Unit does not fall in the range identified no action needs to be taken.
At a cost of ~ $55.00-$62.00 it may be advantageous to purchase a spare and keep it handy in the event the current one fails.

I hope this helps to alleviate any confusion, it was also recommended that any questions be directed to A/H Technical Service @ 574.247.9235 (574-AIR-EXCEL)
