Having owned a class A living in CO, also using it for ski trips, I also did not want a tag axle. Tag axles have a tenancy to get hung up in snow and there is not enough pull on the drive axle to to pull them free. Not only skiing, but my "Hilltop Hilton" was used going to hunting camps, off road fishing spots, weekend beach camping for water skiing etc. A tag served no purpose except to help get stuck.

Hi Chuck,
You may forgetting one thing, these newer coaches have electronic traction control. You gear heads from the 50s and 60s remember positive traction? And the folks with farming background remember if you had a wheel spinning on your tractor you could apply the brake to that wheel and force the power to the wheel that had more traction?
That’s the ways our traction control works, I sure most you know that.
But anyway I’m not going out when it’s snowing in the coach, not afraid of the snow just the salt and chemicals.

Richard

Ditto on tags in the snow, We park extensively at Crystal Mountain Wa, which usually involves sheets of ice and sites that slope back and sideways. I have seen several tag coaches pulled out. Usually their first trip is their last. As far as ATC from Spartan goes it is NOT the "posi" from the old days, it selectively applies the brakes to the wheel that is spinning, transferring power to the one with traction. From my experience on ice it is far from optimal. I jeep extensively, having selectable lockers in both drive axles. Cant count the number of Jeep Saharas with ATC I have had to assist.

While not related to drivability or handling, here is something else to keep in mind regarding tag axles:

The addition of a tag axle to a given motorhome results in a loss of four linear feet of basement storage space. A 22.5” wheel & tire assembly is right at three feet in diameter. Add approximately six inches on either side for clearance and you’ve lost four linear feet of what would otherwise be available for basement storage.

Using Tiffin as an example, their Allegro Bus product line has a 40-AP plan and a 40-IP plan, both of which are 41 feet long and neither of which currently has a tag-axle chassis. Separately, their 45 OPP plan is 45 feet long and does have a tag axle. All three coaches have a virtually identical volume of basement storage space.

Rumors abound that weight considerations will soon force the addition of a tag axle to the 40-AP and 40-IP. When/if that happens, those coaches will lose four linear feet of basement storage space.

Not a knock on tag axles, just one more thing to consider when you wish for or against a tag-axle chassis.

So how did this thread get highjacked from being about an OP venting about a heating system issue to tag axels and traction control? Not fair to the OP IMHO.

I’ve only been in two situations where drive wheels were spinning, both times dumping the air off the tag put more weight on drive and had no more spinning.
