I would imagine that many of them are not adjusted correctly when being installed. If you open them up enough to get a look you will see it's a fairly robust seal design that when adjusted properly will stay dry and free of dirt/dust. They should also fit tight enough so as not to move when stowed.

yes, a call to Girard company techline told me there is an adjustment to tighten eliminating the problem. You are right on. Thank you so much !!!!

Boy do I wish I had known this sooner. Our awning would hold water, so we cut a small hole into it. That worked until we were gone, got a bad rainstorm, & found our awning bent to the ground with rainwater. We had to take it down & throw it away.
