Block heater
It's cold in Texas and it is supposed to be about 34 when I start out tomorrow. What temp should we start using the block heater? I read on another thread it was 45. I have I never worried about it unless it was really cold.......like in the 20's. I checked the videos and did not see one on this subject.

If I were you I would turn it on befroe going to bed tonight and keep the heart of your operation nice and warm for starting in the morning. Nothing it will hurt by keeping it warm. Just like everything to do with RV'ing, everyone has thier way of doing things, some will say no and some will yes....turn it on. What sounds right to as the owner of that new Coach? Warm engine in the morning for starting or a engine that is 34 deg.?

I've never seen anything "official," but I think the rule-of-thumb is freezing (32 degrees). You only need to use it for three or so hours on the morning you plan to hit the road. Turn it off as soon as the engne is running. \ken

We've been round and round on this forum on when to plug in the block heater. Seems the consensus was freezing or below...whatever, but do not leave it plugged in when you hit the road....see the first Entegra newsletter for more...that comes from the manufacturer.

Up here in the Great White North we've been know to leave our diesel engines with out plugging in until -5 ish F. But I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to plug in before the mercury gets that low.

I thought it was the opposite. Putting aqua hot heat to "preheat" the engine.

We have a block heater in the TS. We have been in some teen temperatures. Being from FL I forget that I even have a block heater and have never plugged it in. Never had a problem starting the next morning, but I would have plugged it in if I would have remembered. Engines prefer a warm start over a cold start.

It's free, pug it in. Like said, many differnt opinions. I have over 5 million paid miles behind me, I turn mine on at 45* twenty four hours before I crank it.

We plugged in Saturday night before turning in, Sunday morning it was 21 degrees but the engined fired off like a champ. I plan to make use of it at predicted AM temps of 40 degrees or below as was stated in a previous post. I called Spartan and confirmed that I was OK doing it that way. I just need to remember to unplug it as well.

X2 The engine will heat the aqua hot while going down the road regardless. The switch in the bathroom is to preheat the engine.

The way I understand the Engine Preheat switch is it controls a valve vs a system. It works by allowing the Aqua Hot Coolant to circulate thru the heat exchanger with the engine coolant. If the engine is cold and the Aqua Hot is warm, it will gradually warm the engine coolant and therefore the motor. If the engine is warmest, opening the valve allows the hot coolant to warm the Aqua hot system and it can be used in any zone.
