Blowout on right front

Just wanted to tell you about what happened to us. Last Thursday we were taking the coach to Tulsa. In Temple, TX just 29 miles from the house at 10:00 AM in 82 degree weather with 118 lbs. in the front tires (with tire monitors) the left front tire blew out. We were doing sixty mph between the concrete barriers (construction) passing an 18 wheeler and we were in the left lane. All of the sudden the right front Goodyear tire blew out with a very loud bang! The wheel jerked to the right but since I was in such a tight area I was holding on with both hands. I had to drive three miles to the exit and the tire tore up the wiring that was in the wheel well. I really wish Entegra would have used a metal chase for the wires. Attached is a pic of the tire, wheel and wires. I called a road service and told him what happened and where we were. He told me $440.00 for a tire and the road service. I said I did not call for a quote I called for help. I also told him the wheel was torn up and he said he would send a wheel. I assumed it would be a steel wheel but it was an aluminum wheel just like the one I tore up. The new tire was a Dunlop tire. I know it's not a RV tire but it drove and rode well and the tire guy says this is a really good tire. I'm going to get another one of the Dunlop tires for the driver's side front and leave the GY's on all the rears.
I stopped at MHSRV and they said they could not fix it that I would have to take it to a body shop (what). I sent this to PJ at Entegra to see if I will have to drive the coach to the Mother ship for repair. We went ahead and drove to Tulsa and to our surprise the only two items that did not work were the steps and the door keypad. Now there is at least twenty wires torn in half so I have no idea what all those wires go to. There is also some damage to the door trim and a lot of tire black all over the wheel well and door.

Doug

At least you are safe and you were able to hold onto the wheel. Sorry for all the damage, but it could have been much worse.

You are right it could have been way worse. I promise I will never purchase another Goodyear tire as long as I live. I read about them having blowout issues with other size RV tires but could only find one other person that had a blowout on this size Goodyear and it was on an Entegra Aspire. He had 28,000 miles and our coach had 26,000 miles. Our coach was picked up on 8-1-13 and the tires were made in 2013 so they were not too old, were not overloaded, and pressure was correct and monitored. Speed and heat were also not a factor.

Wow, really glad that turned up in the good column. Question: on your tire monitoring system (you did not mention which TMS you were running), did you get any type of indication for the rapid air loss (RAL as the TMS guys like to call it)? Did your TMS show a high temperature or excess air pressure for the tire?

Was the RAL spot on the inside or outside sidewall or the main treads? I inspect the outside sidewalls before every trip but problems can start in many other places on the tire.

Glad you are OK and hope the coach repairs get you back on the road soon.

Hey Doug,

Wow, glad you guys are ok.

I can only add, that this past summer i replaced one of the GoodYear's on our Aspire, due to a cut on the inside sidewall. If not for Transwest in Denver, finding the cut (during normal maintenance), I may have never found it, and could have suffered the same fate. I can only guess, during our Interstate travels last summer, we may have cut the sidewall on a pothole. I know I hit my share.

For those unable to get under these coaches to visually inspect tires and drive train, we must rely on a good shop to keep us in working order. Transwest sure saved our bacon.

Cheers!!

Glad your okay and sorry it happened to you.
I'm curious how hard did it pull and how hard was it to keep control. I've always dreaded this situation

So very glad you responded to the blowout successfully and made it to the roadside safely. Most of us never have been (and hopefully never will be) put to that test on a motor coach. Here's a toast of little vino to your success without more damage or injury.

Doug. If you need body work. Check out Coach Specialist in Mansfield TX. They repaired a scratch on the rear of my coach. I was pleased with their work

Doug, I am so sorry to see that you suffered most RV'er worst nightmare. It is amazing how much damage a tire blowing causes. Glad you shared the Goodyear experience with others. I had one set on an RV, that died prematurely with no CS from Goodyear. Please keep us informed about what has to be done to correct the wiring. Glad you are all OK and no more damage. I'll bet all the race car experience really came in handy.

Glad all are ok!
When we bought our new to us DP, I thought about making up a 'roll cage' for the front wheel wells to limit the damage in case of a blowout. Something out of steel tubing might work. Million $ idea.

Doug,

Nice job on keeping the motor home under control in such tight quarters. It could have easily been a lot worse. Glad everyone was ok. A little re-wiring and body work and it will all be a distant memory.

Glad you guys faired well. I was left stranded for 11 days by ORLANDO RV or rvone whatever they are calling their selves these days. Even after I purchased a so called total tire protection contract from this jokeWelcome to NSD Motor Club Services | Nation Safe Drivers If you are trying to be hard sold like we were from rvone TO THE ABOVE COMPANY RUNNNNNN Ours happened almost 2 months ago and we have not heard from either one of them Totally mislead also ignored by both companies. That's my experience with those 2 companies. never again.
